Homeless man Inherited his Poor Grandmother’s Mountain House—Then Discovered a Secret Inside

Chapter 5

The entrance to Black Pine Mine was hidden behind a collapsed wooden structure.

Daniel arrived just after sunrise.

Snow covered the ground.

The mine entrance was sealed with a metal gate, but the lock had been cut recently.

Someone had been inside.

Daniel entered.

The tunnel descended sharply.

He used his flashlight and followed old tracks in the dirt.

After several hundred feet, he found a wooden support beam with something carved into it.

M.H.

Margaret Hayes.

Daniel touched the letters.

His grandmother had been here.

He continued.

The tunnel divided into three paths.

He checked the map.

Only one led toward the second vault.

After twenty minutes, he reached a steel door.

The key Eleanor gave him fit perfectly.

The door opened.

Inside was a room much larger than the first vault.

Shelves lined the walls.

Boxes filled the floor.

There were photographs, ledgers, maps, and old film reels.

Daniel walked slowly through the room.

Then he found a metal cabinet labeled:

PROPERTY ACQUISITIONS — 1956–1984.

He opened it.

Hundreds of names appeared.

Families.

Farmers.

Business owners.

Entire towns.

Beside each name were numbers.

Purchase prices.

Debt amounts.

Legal settlements.

Daniel recognized several family names from his own town.

Then he found his father’s company.

His father’s name.

Daniel’s hands began shaking.

The file was dated only eight years earlier.

His father’s construction company had been deliberately targeted.

A group of investors had purchased the company’s debt through shell corporations.

Then they had forced the company into bankruptcy.

Daniel’s father had died shortly afterward.

Daniel had always believed his father had died from stress.

The file said otherwise.

There was a photograph.

Daniel’s father standing outside his office.

Beside him was Robert Miller.

Daniel stared.

Robert had been involved in his family’s destruction.

He hadn’t just known Margaret.

He had been monitoring the family for decades.

Daniel searched deeper.

He found a folder labeled:

HAYES FAMILY — FINAL GENERATION.

Inside was a photograph of Daniel as a child.

Someone had written:

Only remaining heir.

Daniel’s breathing became shallow.

They had been watching him.

For years.

He opened another document.

It contained his employment history.

His debts.

His apartment.

His failed business.

Even his homelessness.

Someone had documented everything.

Daniel felt sick.

Then he found a recent photograph.

It showed him sleeping outside a shelter.

Taken only weeks earlier.

The date was three weeks ago.

Someone was still watching him.

A noise echoed through the mine.

Daniel turned.

Footsteps.

He shut off his flashlight.

Someone entered the vault.

A man’s voice called:

“You shouldn’t have come here.”

Daniel recognized it.

Robert.

Daniel stepped into the shadows.

Robert walked inside.

He was carrying a gun.

“I hoped your grandmother would take the secret with her.”

Daniel remained hidden.

Robert continued.

“She was stubborn.”

“You killed her.”

Robert stopped.

Daniel stepped into the light.

Robert looked at him.

“No.”

“You were with her three months ago.”

“Yes.”

“She knew.”

“She knew enough.”

“What happened?”

Robert sighed.

“She refused to tell me where the final documents were.”

Daniel stared.

“She knew you were involved.”

“She knew everything.”

Robert lowered the gun slightly.

“Your grandmother spent forty years protecting you.”

“From you?”

“From them.”

“Who are they?”

Robert looked exhausted.

“The organization that destroyed your family.”

Daniel asked:

“Are you part of it?”

Robert shook his head.

“I used to be.”

The admission shocked Daniel.

Robert explained that he had worked for them when he was young.

But he eventually discovered what they were doing.

He tried to leave.

They killed his brother.

Since then, he had secretly helped Margaret protect the documents.

Daniel stared.

“Then why did you lie?”

“Because if they knew you had the house, you’d be dead.”

“Who is their leader?”

Robert looked at the floor.

“You’ve met him.”

Daniel frowned.

“I have?”

Robert nodded.

“He attended your grandmother’s funeral.”

Daniel’s mind raced.

The funeral had been small.

Only a few people.

Then Daniel remembered.

One man had stood far away from everyone.

An elderly man in a black coat.

He had never introduced himself.

Robert whispered:

“His name is Charles Whitmore.”

Daniel froze.

Whitmore.

The family that had once owned the construction company.

The family that had destroyed his father’s business.

And now Daniel realized something horrifying.

The man who had made him homeless had been searching for the same secret his grandfather died protecting.
