Homeless At 22, He Found An Abandoned $20 Farm Deep In The Pines – Then Everything Changed

Chapter 4

Ethan waited until morning.

He packed food, water, a flashlight, a first-aid kit, and the old map.

Then he headed into the pine forest.

The trees were dense.

The path from the map barely existed.

He followed faded markers carved into trunks.

Three lines.

Then three lines again.

After nearly two hours, Ethan reached a small clearing.

At the center stood a stone foundation.

There was nothing else.

No cabin.

No equipment.

Just four stone walls half buried in moss.

Ethan searched around.

Nothing.

Then he noticed a metal pipe sticking out of the ground.

He dug.

The pipe connected to something underground.

A hatch.

His heart jumped.

He cleared the dirt and opened it.

A narrow stairway disappeared into darkness.

Ethan hesitated.

Then he turned on his flashlight.

He went down.

The tunnel extended beneath the forest.

The walls were reinforced with old timber.

After twenty yards, it opened into a chamber.

Ethan stared.

The room contained mining equipment.

Old shelves.

Crates.

And a table covered with geological samples.

He picked up one rock.

It had a strange green-gold shine.

He had seen similar colors in pictures of copper deposits.

But there was more.

A metal cabinet stood against the wall.

Inside were maps.

Survey results.

Contracts.

One document caught his attention.

PROPERTY ASSESSMENT — JAMES CARTER FARM.

The estimated mineral value was enormous.

Ethan’s mouth went dry.

The farm wasn’t worthless.

It sat above a valuable mineral deposit.

But the report contained a warning.

Extraction would contaminate the river feeding Pine Hollow.

Another document showed Morgan Ridge Development’s proposed drilling plans.

Ethan understood.

They didn’t want the land for houses.

They wanted what was beneath it.

He took photographs of everything.

Then he found a final folder.

Inside was a photograph of James Carter standing beside a young woman.

On the back was written:

“Emily knows the truth.”

Ethan stared at the name.

Emily.

Who was she?

He returned to town that evening.

Rose was closing the diner.

“Where did you go?”

“The forest.”

She froze.

“You found something.”

Ethan showed her the photograph.

“Do you know Emily?”

Rose stared at it.

Then slowly nodded.

“She was James Carter’s daughter.”

“Where is she?”

Rose looked uncomfortable.

“She left Pine Hollow twenty years ago.”

“Why?”

“Because Morgan Ridge wanted her silence.”

Ethan felt a chill.

“What happened to James?”

Rose lowered her eyes.

“He disappeared.”

“Accident?”

“Nobody knows.”

Ethan stared at the photograph.

A missing farmer.

A hidden mine.

A development company.

A woman named Emily who supposedly knew the truth.

Suddenly, the twenty-dollar purchase made sense.

Someone wanted the farm out of public hands before anyone discovered what was underneath.

And Ethan had accidentally bought the one piece of land they couldn’t control.
