The old mill stood beside a frozen creek.
Ethan and Victor searched for hours.
They found nothing.
Then Victor noticed a loose stone beneath the mill floor.
They moved it.
A narrow space appeared.
Inside was an old metal container.
Ethan opened it.
Documents.
Cash.
A passport.
And a handwritten letter.
The letter was addressed to Emily.
Ethan read it aloud.
“Emily, if you ever find this, tell your brother the truth.”
Victor looked shocked.
“Your brother?”
Ethan stared at him.
“Emily had a brother?”
“She didn’t.”
Victor suddenly understood.
“James had another child.”
Ethan read the next paragraph.
“Your mother believed you were safer away from Pine Hollow.”
The letter revealed something enormous.
James had another child with a woman named Sarah Hayes.

“You have a brother.”

“My father had another child.”
“Who?”

“Me.”

For several minutes, neither spoke.

“Neither did I.”
They agreed to meet.
But before that could happen, Caleb Morgan arrived at the farm.
He stood on the porch.
“You found it.”

“The mill.”
Caleb nodded.
“My father spent twenty years looking for those documents.”
“What happened to James?”
Caleb’s face changed.
“My father didn’t kill him.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“Then who did?”

“Who?”
“Victor.”
Ethan turned.
Victor had gone pale.
Caleb continued.
“He betrayed your father.”

“You were there.”
“I tried to save him.”
“You ran.”
Victor stepped forward.
“I was threatened.”
Caleb smiled.
“That is what cowards say.”
Ethan looked between them.
One of them was lying.
Then he remembered the letter.
James had written to Emily.
The letter existed because he had trusted Victor.
Maybe Victor wasn’t the betrayer.

Ethan looked at Caleb.
“What happened to James?”
Caleb’s expression hardened.

The water contamination was traced to chemicals that had been dumped upstream.
