Homeless at 18, She Was Left a $12 Storage Unit — The “Junk” Inside Was Worth $4.2 Million
Chapter 6
Someone broke into the storage facility that night.
The police found no obvious sign of forced entry.
Nothing had been stolen.
That made it worse.
Someone had searched carefully.
Only the red box had been moved.
Charlotte arrived the next morning.
Her hands shook.
Daniel examined the room.
“They were looking for documents.”
“How do you know?”
“They didn’t take the valuable pieces.”
He pointed toward the paintings.
“Whoever came here knew they were worth something.”
Charlotte felt cold.
“Then they know.”
“Probably.”
“Who?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
He had already started making calls.
By afternoon, he discovered Eleanor Voss’s family had recently reopened an estate claim.
A private company representing one of her surviving relatives had been searching for missing property.
The lead investigator was a man named Victor Hale.
Victor requested a meeting with Charlotte.
He arrived at a law office in an expensive suit.
“You have something that belonged to Eleanor.”
Charlotte remained silent.
“You should return it.”
“I don’t know that it’s yours.”
Victor smiled.
“The estate has records.”
“So do I.”
His smile disappeared slightly.
“You’re a young woman with no experience in this world.”
Charlotte looked at him.
“You’d be surprised.”
Victor leaned forward.
“Take a settlement.”
“How much?”
“Two hundred thousand dollars.”
Daniel looked at Charlotte.
She understood.
They were trying to buy her silence.
She stood.
“No.”
Victor’s expression hardened.
“You’ll regret that.”
Charlotte left.
Outside, Daniel asked:
“Are you frightened?”
“Yes.”
“But?”
She looked back at the office.
“I’m still saying no.”
