Daniel couldn’t speak.
The girls were standing beside Emma.
Ella held her mother’s hand.
Grace stared at Daniel with open curiosity.
“Mom,” Grace whispered, “is he the person from the picture?”
Emma’s face changed.
Daniel looked at her.
“What picture?”
Emma said nothing.
Ella answered.
“You have a photograph of him.”
Daniel’s heart tightened.
“Why?”
Emma gently touched her daughter’s shoulder.
“Girls, go wait with Aunt Sarah.”
They hesitated.
Then left.
Daniel waited until they were gone.
“You have children.”
“Yes.”
“They’re mine.”
Emma looked away.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
She laughed bitterly.
“Would you have stayed if you knew?”
“I would have.”
“You don’t know that.”
He stared at her.
“I would have.”
“You left anyway.”
He had no answer.
The words were too simple.

“Why didn’t you find me?”
“I thought you wanted me gone.”
“I was waiting for you to ask me to stay.”
He closed his eyes.

“Can I see them?”
Emma hesitated.
“They’re not a business deal.”
“I know.”
