Daniel’s first meeting with the twins happened at a quiet restaurant.

Daniel arrived twenty minutes early.
He changed his suit three times before choosing the simplest one.
When Emma arrived with the girls, he stood.
“Hi.”
Grace smiled.
“Hello.”
Ella was quieter.
Daniel knelt.
“I’ve heard a lot about you.”
Grace tilted her head.
“From Mom?”
“Yes.”
“What did she say?”
“That you’re both very smart.”
Grace smiled.
“What about me?”
Daniel looked at Ella.
“She said you’re thoughtful.”
Ella smiled faintly.
They sat.
The conversation was awkward at first.

Grace asked about his company.
“Do you really own skyscrapers?”

“Some.”
“How many?”
“Too many.”

“Are you always busy?”

“Why did you stop?”

“What things?”

The girls went quiet.

When Grace talked about science, he listened.
When Ella talked about drawing, he listened.
At the end of the evening, Grace asked:
“Will we see you again?”
Daniel looked at Emma.
