A letter from a merchant in Virginia confirmed that Thomas had been poisoned after threatening to expose Crane.
Mary read it alone.
Jonathan waited outside.
When she finally emerged, she was crying.
“He was telling the truth.”
Jonathan held her.
“He knew they would kill him.”
“I should have believed him.”
“You were deceived.”
“I left him.”
“You were forced out.”
“I should have stayed.”
Jonathan held her tighter.
“You survived.”
Mary cried against his shoulder.

“I need to ask you something.”

“You’re nervous.”

“What is it?”
“Will you stay?”
She looked at the ranch.
The barns.
The fields.
The horses.
The house.
Then at him.
“As an employee?”
Jonathan shook his head.
“As family.”
Mary’s eyes filled.
“You mean marriage.”
“Yes.”
She laughed softly.
“You could have simply said that.”
“I am trying.”
She looked at him.
“Why me?”
“Because you saved my ranch.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“That isn’t enough.”
Jonathan stepped closer.
“You saved it before you ever touched the cattle.”
“How?”
“You taught me to listen.”
He took her hand.
“You taught me that a ranch isn’t fences and buildings.”
He paused.
“It is the person who stays when everything else burns.”
Mary whispered:
