He Gave A Homeless Woman A Job — Months Later, She Saved His Ranch
Chapter 13
They returned to Hale’s Crossing with legal authority behind them.
But Crane had moved first.
When they arrived, the ranch was empty.
Barn doors stood open.
The house had been searched.
The cattle were gone.
Mary ran toward the pasture.
Nothing.
Jonathan stood motionless.
For the first time, she saw him truly broken.
“They took everything.”
Mary looked at the ground.
Tracks.
Many horses.
But something else.
She walked to the northern field.
The grass was flattened.
A wagon had passed.
Then she noticed a line of disturbed earth.
“What?”
Jonathan joined her.
She pointed.
“They didn’t take the cattle east.”
“Where?”
“North.”
The old road.
The hidden route.
She ran toward the hill.
Jonathan followed.
At the top, they saw the herd.
Hundreds of cattle were trapped inside a temporary enclosure.
Crane’s men were preparing to drive them toward the river.
Jonathan looked furious.
“We need the ranch hands.”
Mary shook her head.
“We don’t have time.”
“What do you suggest?”
She looked toward the river.
Then toward the old mill.
Then at the cattle.
“I can move them.”
“How?”
“The herd follows water.”
She remembered every detail of the ranch.
The old irrigation channel.
The dry creek.
The unused stone trough.
She could redirect the herd.
But the plan required them to open the northern gate.
Jonathan looked at the armed men.
“Too many.”
Mary pointed toward the barn.
“There are six barrels of lamp oil.”
He understood.
They created a false fire.
Jonathan set one barrel near the empty barn.
Mary lit a small flame.
Smoke rose.
The men shouted.
“Fire!”
Half the guards ran.
Jonathan opened the cattle gate.
Mary rode toward the herd.
The animals surged.
The remaining guards fired.
Jonathan rode beside her.
Mary guided the herd toward the old creek.
The men tried to block them.
Then the cattle turned.
The entire herd thundered toward Hale’s Crossing.
Crane’s men scattered.
Mary screamed directions.
“Open the south gate!”
Jonathan did.
The herd entered the ranch.
Hundreds of cattle.
Alive.
Saved.
Jonathan rode beside Mary.
She was laughing.
He looked at her.
“You saved my ranch.”
She shook her head.
“We saved it.”
