The people of Willow Creek arrived the next morning.
Samuel thought they had come to see the damage.
Instead, they brought lumber.
Tools.
Nails.
Food.
Clara’s sewing customers came too.
They had not forgotten.
For days, people worked.
The blacksmith repaired metal tools.
The carpenter rebuilt the frame.
Women from town brought meals.
Children carried water.
Samuel stood in the center of it all, stunned.
Clara smiled.
“You built a house before you had a family.”
He looked around.
“And now?”
“Now you have one.”
Samuel looked at her.
Something in his chest broke open.
He had spent years believing independence was strength.
But Clara had shown him something different.
A home wasn’t built by refusing help.
It was built by allowing people to stay.
When the barn was finally rebuilt, Samuel stood beside Clara.
“It looks better.”
She smiled.
“It does.”
“Because of you?”
“Because you listened.”
Samuel laughed.
“I don’t remember doing that.”
“You’re improving.”
He looked at her.
“Clara.”
“Yes?”
“I have something to ask.”
Her smile faded slightly.
“What?”
“When you first arrived…”
He looked toward the house.
“You called this home.”
“I remember.”
“Do you still mean it?”
Clara looked at the porch.
The curtains.
The flowers.
The fields.
Then she looked at Samuel.
“Yes.”
He nodded.
“Good.”
She waited.
“That was all?”
Samuel looked embarrassed.
“I hadn’t prepared anything else.”
Clara laughed.
Then she kissed him.
It was the first time.
Neither of them moved for several seconds.
When they finally stepped apart, Samuel whispered:
“I definitely didn’t prepare for that.”
“Then you’ll have to learn.”
