He Built the House Before He Sent for a Mail Order Bride — She Walked In and Called It Home

Chapter 12

Twenty years later, Samuel stood on the porch watching the sunset.

Clara sat beside him.

Their daughter ran the ranch with her husband.

The old sewing room had become an office.

The empty fields had become grazing land.

And the house still stood.

Samuel looked toward the western hill.

“Do you ever wonder what would have happened if you hadn’t come?”

Clara smiled.

“You’d probably have organized the flour beside the lamp oil forever.”

Samuel laughed.

“I might have.”

“And the curtains?”

“I still think Mrs. Doyle chose the wrong color.”

Clara leaned against him.

“You’re wrong.”

“I know.”

She looked at him.

Samuel smiled.

“I’ve learned.”

They sat quietly.

Then Clara asked:

“Why did you really build the house first?”

Samuel thought for a moment.

Then answered honestly.

“Because I was lonely.”

Clara waited.

“I thought if I built a house, eventually someone would come.”

Her eyes softened.

“And then?”

“Then you arrived.”

He looked toward the front door.

“You didn’t ask what it cost.”

“You were hiding that part.”

He laughed.

“You didn’t ask how much land I owned.”

“No.”

“You walked in.”

Clara squeezed his hand.

“And?”

Samuel smiled.

“You called it home.”

She rested her head against him.

“Because it was.”

Samuel looked toward the fading light.

All those years ago, he had believed the house was the beginning.

He had been wrong.

The house had only been a structure.

Walls.

Wood.

Stone.

A roof.

Clara had given it meaning.

She had filled the rooms with laughter.

Turned empty spaces into memories.

And taught him that a person could build a place for someone without knowing who would arrive.

But a house only became a home when someone chose to stay.

Samuel looked at Clara.

She was still beside him.

Still choosing.

And so was he.
