Everyone Tried to Help the Troubled Pianist—Until a Waitress Played One Familiar Song

Chapter 11

The message was short.

Your mother hid one last thing.

Then:

I know where it is.

Victor had escaped before trial.

The police warned Claire not to leave the city.

She ignored them.

She wanted to know what her mother had hidden.

Adrian stayed with her.

They returned to the old music academy.

Eleanor’s office had been sealed.

The trust documents were already removed.

But Claire remembered something.

Her mother had always hidden letters inside piano benches.

They found the old piano.

Claire lifted the seat.

Inside was a small metal box.

A note.

The final piece.

Inside the box was a photograph.

Eleanor standing beside a little boy.

Claire didn’t recognize him.

She turned it over.

My son.

She froze.

Adrian stared.

“What?”

Claire’s mother had another child.

A son.

Someone she had never known.

They found the name.

Michael Bennett.

Born two years before Claire.

The records showed he had been adopted.

“Where is he?” Claire asked.

The answer was in another file.

He had grown up under another family name.

Now he was a lawyer in Chicago.

Claire called him.

He agreed to meet.

When they saw each other, neither knew what to say.

Then Michael looked at Claire.

“You have Mom’s eyes.”

She cried.

He hugged her.

Adrian stood back.

Michael told them the truth.

Eleanor had given him up because Victor threatened his life.

She believed keeping him away was the only way to save him.

Michael had spent years searching for her.

He never found her.

“I thought she abandoned me.”

Claire shook her head.

“She was protecting you.”

Michael smiled sadly.

“That’s what she did.”

He handed Claire a folder.

“She left this with my adoptive parents.”

Inside was the final evidence.

Victor had paid someone to stage Eleanor’s accident.

The payment came through the same company that had funded Adrian’s career.

Adrian stared.

“My career.”

Victor had used Adrian’s success to launder money.

He had sponsored concerts.

Donations.

Scholarships.

Everything had been part of the network.

Adrian felt sick.

“I was part of it.”

“No,” Claire said.

“You were used.”

He looked at her.

“And now?”

“Now we end it.”

They gave the evidence to federal investigators.

Victor was found two days later.

He was arrested again.

This time there was nowhere left to run.

As police led him away, he looked at Claire.

“You think your mother won?”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at Adrian.

“We did.”
