A 20-Year-Old Bought the Dead Land No Rich Farmer Wanted — Then He Opened the Record They Ignored

Chapter 5

Caleb spent the next week comparing old water records.

The pattern was obvious.

Whenever the underground water level began recovering, nearby private wells suddenly pumped enormous amounts.

The timestamps matched.

The same three ranches appeared repeatedly.

Harold Bennett’s was one of them.

Caleb confronted him.

“You knew.”

Harold looked at the documents.

“Not everything.”

“You knew the water wasn’t gone.”

Harold sighed.

“We knew there was something under the ground.”

“Then why abandon this property?”

“Because the last owner refused to sell access.”

Caleb stared at him.

“How long?”

“Twenty years.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Harold looked tired.

“Because people fight over water.”

“People already are.”

Harold looked toward the hills.

“The men who controlled the valley wanted that land quiet.”

“Who?”

Harold didn’t answer.

Caleb stepped closer.

“My father knew.”

Harold nodded.

“He knew enough to become a problem.”

Caleb felt his chest tighten.

“My father was killed in an accident.”

Harold looked away.

“That’s what the report said.”

Caleb stood still.

“What are you saying?”

Harold walked back toward his truck.

“I’m saying you should be careful who you trust.”

Then he left.

Caleb remained standing in the dirt.

For two years, he had believed his father’s death was a farm accident.

Now he had a reason to question it.
