A 20-Year-Old Bought the Dead Land No Rich Farmer Wanted — Then He Opened the Record They Ignored
Chapter 2
The next morning, Caleb began digging.
Not randomly.
Not with expensive equipment.
He used the old survey map his father had left behind.
The map showed a geological fault beneath the property.
According to the modern records, it had no practical significance.
But the old record suggested something else.
A natural underground water channel had once crossed beneath the land.
The county had sealed the easement decades earlier after a landslide changed the local drainage system.
No one had looked at the document since.
Caleb believed the water had never disappeared.
It had moved.
For three days, he dug.
On the fourth morning, his neighbor appeared.
Harold Bennett owned the largest ranch in the valley.
His property contained thousands of acres.
He drove up in a spotless black truck.
“You really bought this place.”
Caleb wiped dirt from his hands.
“Looks that way.”
Harold laughed.
“You’ve wasted your money.”
“Maybe.”
“I offered twenty thousand for it five years ago.”
“And?”
“The seller wanted thirty.”
Caleb smiled.
“Guess you got lucky.”
Harold looked around.
“Nothing grows here.”
“Not yet.”
Harold shook his head.
“You remind me of your father.”
Caleb’s expression changed.
“That’s supposed to be an insult?”
“No.”
Harold looked toward the valley.
“Your father saw possibilities where most people saw problems.”
Then he drove away.
Caleb watched him go.
For a moment, he wondered whether Harold knew something.
Something about his father.
Something about the land.
That afternoon, Caleb dug another two feet.
The soil became darker.
Then damp.
He stopped.
His heart began beating faster.
He pressed his hand against the ground.
Cold moisture seeped between his fingers.
He stared.
“You’re still here.”
The water hadn’t disappeared.
It had simply gone deeper.
