“Wait… you almost married her?”
The laughter that followed was loud enough to turn every head in the restaurant.
Emily Carter stood beside the private dining room entrance, one hand wrapped around the strap of her worn handbag, the other holding the invitation she had nearly thrown away that morning.
Across the room, Vanessa Sterling leaned comfortably against the polished bar, a crystal glass between her fingers.
She was beautiful, wealthy, and perfectly dressed.
She was also the wife of billionaire investor Richard Sterling.
And she was looking directly at Emily.
Richard sat beside her, visibly uncomfortable.
“Vanessa,” he said quietly.
“What?” Vanessa smiled. “I’m only asking.”
Emily felt heat rise into her face.
She hadn’t expected this.
She had come because Richard had personally invited her to a charity dinner celebrating the opening of the Sterling Foundation’s new children’s center.
She hadn’t seen him in seven years.
Seven years since their engagement had ended.
Seven years since Richard’s family had made it clear that someone like Emily didn’t belong beside him.
She had almost left when she saw him.
Then Vanessa had noticed her.
And somehow, the woman had recognized her name.
“You’re Emily Carter, aren’t you?” Vanessa asked.
Emily nodded.
Vanessa laughed softly.
“Richard’s old fiancée.”
The room became awkward.
Emily looked at Richard.
He stood.
“That’s enough.”
Vanessa tilted her head.
“I didn’t know she still looked like that.”
Emily’s fingers tightened around her handbag.
Richard’s face hardened.
“Emily, I’m sorry.”
She gave him a small smile.
“It’s fine.”
It wasn’t.
But she had learned a long time ago that dignity sometimes meant walking away before someone else could make you beg for it.
She turned toward the exit.
Then the restaurant doors opened.
Every conversation stopped.
A tall man in a dark suit entered with two lawyers behind him.
He wasn’t smiling.
He didn’t look at Richard.
He didn’t look at Vanessa.
He looked directly at Emily.
And when he saw her standing there, something changed in his expression.
The billionaire restaurant owner lowered his head slightly and said four words that made the entire room freeze.
“Miss Carter, you’re late.”
Emily stared at him.
