“You Almost Married Her?” Millionaire’s Wife Mocked Her—Unaware of Who Just Arrived!
Chapter 9
Emily didn’t go alone.
Jonathan’s security team followed from a distance.
The old office had been abandoned for years.
Dust covered the furniture.
Richard waited near the entrance.
“I found this in my father’s storage.”
He handed Emily a key.
“What does it open?”
“The basement.”
They descended.
The room smelled of damp paper.
Boxes filled the walls.
Richard found one labeled with a date.
Emily opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Her mother.
Her grandfather.
Charles Sterling.
And a fourth person.
Jonathan recognized him.
“Martin Hale.”
Emily stared.
“They were all working together?”
“Not exactly,” Richard said.
He looked ashamed.
“My father and your grandfather were partners.”
“What happened?”
“They disagreed about how the family assets should be handled.”
Richard explained.
Her grandfather wanted the wealth used for long-term charitable projects.
Charles wanted greater control.
Their conflict became bitter.
Then Laura discovered that money had been moved through shell companies.
She confronted Charles.
Charles denied everything.
But the records suggested otherwise.
Emily found another envelope.
Inside was a letter from her grandfather.
Laura, if you are reading this, Charles knows.
Emily’s hands shook.
The letter explained that her grandfather feared Charles would destroy the foundation to preserve his private holdings.
He planned to expose the scheme.
Then he disappeared.
Emily looked at Richard.
“Why did you never tell me?”
“I didn’t know.”
“Until now?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Richard swallowed.
“Because my father told me your grandfather was dead.”
Emily closed her eyes.
Richard continued.
“I believed him.”
She looked at him.
“And when you learned?”
“I was already married. The business was collapsing. I was afraid.”
Emily’s voice became quiet.
“You chose fear again.”
Richard nodded.
“Yes.”
That honesty didn’t erase what he had done.
But it made the situation clearer.
Then a noise came from upstairs.
Both froze.
Jonathan’s security team moved toward the stairs.
A door slammed.
Someone ran.
They found an open window.
On the floor was a photograph.
It showed Emily’s grandfather standing beside a man she didn’t recognize.
On the back:
He survived.
Emily looked at Richard.
“Who is that?”
Richard shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
Jonathan took the photograph.
“We’ll find out.”
They did.
The man was a doctor.
Dr. Samuel Reed.
Jonathan knew the name.
“He worked at the clinic where your mother received treatment.”
Emily’s breath caught.
The same clinic.
The same place where Grace had worked.
The same place where payments had been made.
The pieces were beginning to connect.
But the next discovery would change everything.
Because Dr. Reed wasn’t merely a doctor.
He was the person who had signed her grandfather’s original death certificate.
