Dr. Samuel Reed lived quietly outside the city.
He had retired years earlier.
When Emily arrived, he seemed unsurprised.
“I wondered when you’d come.”
Emily stood at the door.
“You knew my mother.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my grandfather.”
“Yes.”
“You signed his death certificate.”
Dr. Reed lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
“Was he dead?”
“No.”
Emily’s breath caught.
“Then why?”
“Because he asked me to.”
“Why would he do that?”
“Because someone was trying to kill him.”
Dr. Reed explained that her grandfather had survived an attack.
He had been seriously injured.
Laura brought him to the clinic.
She begged Dr. Reed to help.
They created a false death record.
Her grandfather disappeared under another identity.
“Where is he now?”
Dr. Reed hesitated.
“I don’t know.”
“You must.”
“I haven’t spoken to him in years.”
Emily felt desperate.
“What about my mother?”
“She knew where he was.”
“Did she tell you?”
“No.”
“Then why did she keep investigating?”
Dr. Reed looked at her.

Emily’s heart broke.
“My mother knew she was in danger?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
“Because she loved you.”

Emily opened it.
