She Rejected the Poor Boy in College… 5 Years Later, He Became Her Boss!
Chapter 1
“I’m sorry, Ethan, but I don’t date guys like you.”
Emma Carter said it quietly.
Almost kindly.
But Ethan Cole felt every word.
They were standing outside the university library on a cold Friday afternoon.
Students rushed around them carrying books, laughing, talking about weekend plans.
Ethan stood there in an old gray jacket that had belonged to his father.
His shoes were worn.
His backpack was faded.
His phone had a cracked screen.
Emma looked completely different.
She wore a cream-colored coat, carried an expensive handbag, and had just finished a private dinner with friends from one of the university’s wealthiest families.
Ethan had spent the entire semester gathering courage to ask her out.
He finally did.
And she had rejected him.
“Is it because I’m not rich?” he asked.
Emma hesitated.
“I didn’t say that.”
“You didn’t have to.”
She sighed.
“Ethan, you’re a great guy.”
He smiled sadly.
“That sentence never ends well.”
She looked uncomfortable.
“I just don’t think we’re right for each other.”
“Because?”
“Because we want different things.”
“What do you want?”
She looked toward the parking lot.
“A stable future.”
“You think I can’t give you one?”
“I think you don’t even know what you’re going to do after graduation.”
Ethan nodded.
That was true.
He worked two jobs.
Delivered food at night.
Repaired computers for other students.
He had scholarships covering tuition, but barely enough money for anything else.
Emma knew all of that.
Maybe that’s what made the rejection hurt more.
She wasn’t guessing.
She knew.
“I understand,” he said.
Emma gave him a sympathetic smile.
“I hope you do well.”
Then she walked away.
Ethan watched her enter a black Mercedes waiting near the curb.
He stood alone for several seconds.
Then his roommate, Daniel, approached.
“You okay?”
Ethan nodded.
“Yeah.”
“You’re lying.”
Ethan laughed.
“Probably.”
Daniel looked at the Mercedes disappearing down the street.
“She rejected you?”
“Yeah.”
“Because you’re broke?”
Ethan looked at his old shoes.
“Apparently.”
Daniel shook his head.
“She’ll regret it.”
Ethan smiled.
“Don’t say that.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t want to become the guy who succeeds just to prove someone wrong.”
Daniel smiled.
“Then what do you want?”
Ethan looked up at the university buildings.
“I want to become someone I respect.”
Five years later, Emma would remember those words.
Because the poor college student she had rejected that day would walk into her office.
Not as a delivery driver.
Not as a struggling graduate.
Not as the young man she’d felt sorry for.
He would walk in as the new CEO.
And Emma would discover that Ethan hadn’t spent five years trying to prove her wrong.
He had spent them building something she could never have imagined.
