The university was celebrating its centennial.
Students filled the lawn.

Emma took the microphone.
“I met Ethan here.”
She smiled.
“I thought I knew what success looked like.”
The audience laughed.
“I was wrong.”
She looked at him.
“He had less money than most people around him.”
“But he had discipline.”

“Kindness.”
“And a determination I didn’t understand.”
She paused.
“I rejected him.”
The audience reacted.
Ethan laughed.
“Very publicly.”
More laughter.
Emma continued.
“I thought I was protecting my future.”

She turned toward Ethan.
“He never came back to prove me wrong.”
“He came back because he had built a life worth coming home to.”
The audience applauded.
Ethan took the microphone.
“I want to correct one thing.”
Emma smiled.
“I didn’t build my life because Emma rejected me.”
“I built it because I needed to know whether I could.”
He looked at the students.
“Never make your success about someone else’s opinion.”
The crowd became quiet.
“Make it about the person you want to become when nobody is watching.”
After the ceremony, Ethan and Emma walked toward the old library.
The building looked smaller now.
Emma laughed.
“How did we ever think this place was huge?”
“We were twenty.”
“True.”
They stood outside.
Ethan reached into his pocket.
He pulled out an old photo.
The two of them in college.
Emma stared.
“You kept that?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because it reminds me.”
“Of the rejection?”
“No.”
He smiled.
“Of where everything started.”
She kissed him.
Years later, the university placed the photograph in the archive.
