She Rejected the Poor Boy in College… 5 Years Later, He Became Her Boss!

Chapter 9

Their relationship developed slowly.

They didn’t rush.

Ethan remained Emma’s boss.

They kept boundaries at work.

Outside the office, they began spending time together.

Coffee.

Dinner.

Weekend walks.

Nothing dramatic.

Everything honest.

Emma realized that the man she had rejected wasn’t trying to impress her.

He simply enjoyed her company.

One evening, she asked:

“What do you actually want?”

Ethan smiled.

“Outside work?”

“Yes.”

He thought.

“A family.”

Emma’s heart skipped.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“After everything?”

He nodded.

“I want something peaceful.”

She smiled.

“So do I.”

Then Ethan asked:

“What about you?”

Emma looked down.

“To be loved without feeling like I need to earn it.”

He took her hand.

“You don’t.”

She looked at him.

It was the first time either of them said something that felt permanent.

But not everything was easy.

The board still watched them.

Some directors worried their relationship would create a conflict of interest.

Ethan proposed a solution.

Emma was transferred to an independent subsidiary.

She kept her position.

But she no longer reported directly to him.

It protected both of them.

Months later, Ethan announced a major new initiative.

A scholarship program for students from low-income families.

Emma attended the launch.

The first scholarship recipient was a young woman named Grace.

Grace approached Ethan.

“My father says rich people don’t understand people like us.”

Ethan smiled.

“I used to think the same.”

Grace looked surprised.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“How did you change?”

“I met people who gave me chances.”

Emma watched him.

Then she understood something.

His success hadn’t made him forget his past.

It had made him responsible for it.

After the event, she hugged him.

“You’re going to change a lot of lives.”

He smiled.

“I hope so.”

One year after they began dating, Ethan brought Emma to the university library.

The same place.

The same steps.

The same courtyard.

Emma recognized it immediately.

“You planned this.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He looked at her.

“Because I wanted to show you something.”

“What?”

“I don’t remember the rejection as the most important part of this place anymore.”

Emma smiled.

“Then what do you remember?”

“The first place where I realized I needed to become someone.”

She squeezed his hand.

“You became him.”

He kissed her.

For the first time, their story no longer belonged to the past.

Then Ethan gave her a small box.

She opened it.

Inside was a ring.

Emma froze.

“You’re not serious.”

“I am.”

She started crying.

Five years earlier, she had rejected Ethan because she believed he couldn’t give her a future.

Now he was offering her one.

Not because he had become rich.

Because he had become himself.
