He Came Home Early and Heard His Mother Threatening His Wife—Then a Hidden Secret Was Revealed

Chapter 1

Michael Carter had always believed that there were some things in life a person simply wasn’t meant to hear.

That Thursday afternoon, he learned exactly how dangerous those words could be.

Michael was thirty-four years old and had spent most of his adult life building Carter Construction from a tiny local business into one of the most respected contracting companies in the county. His days were usually predictable. He left home before seven in the morning, spent most of the day visiting construction sites, and rarely returned before six.

His wife, Emily, had grown accustomed to his schedule.

So had his mother, Margaret.

That afternoon, however, everything changed.

A city inspector unexpectedly canceled a meeting concerning one of Michael’s biggest projects. With nothing else requiring his immediate attention, Michael decided to go home several hours earlier than usual.

He imagined Emily’s surprised smile when he walked through the door.

Instead, the first thing he heard was his mother’s voice.

“You need to leave my son.”

Michael stopped outside the front door.

Margaret’s voice was unmistakable.

Emily answered quietly.

“I can’t do that.”

“You don’t have a choice.”

Michael’s hand remained on the doorknob.

He frowned.

His mother had been visiting that afternoon, but there had never been any serious conflict between her and Emily. At least, not that Michael knew about.

Then Margaret spoke again.

“If Michael finds out what really happened three years ago, he’ll never forgive either of us.”

Michael’s stomach tightened.

Three years ago.

That was the year he married Emily.

He slowly pushed the door open.

The living room fell silent.

Emily stood near the window.

Margaret was sitting across from her.

Both women stared at him.

Michael looked from one to the other.

“What happened three years ago?”

Neither answered.

He closed the door behind him.

“I heard everything.”

Emily’s face turned pale.

Margaret stood.

“Michael, this isn’t what you think.”

“Then tell me what it is.”

“It’s complicated.”

“No,” Michael said. “It sounds pretty simple. My mother just threatened my wife.”

Margaret looked toward Emily.

“She knows what I’m talking about.”

Michael turned to his wife.

“Emily?”

Emily’s eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted to tell you.”

“When?”

“I don’t know.”

“After another year? Five years?”

She shook her head.

“I was afraid.”

“Afraid of me?”

“No.”

She glanced at Margaret.

“Of what would happen if you knew.”

Michael noticed the movement.

His mother looked terrified.

Not angry.

Terrified.

That frightened him more than anything.

He stepped closer.

“What happened three years ago?”

Margaret finally spoke.

“Your father wasn’t the man you believed he was.”

Michael stared at her.

His father had died eight years earlier.

As far as Michael knew, Richard Carter had been a successful businessman who had worked hard, raised a family, and left behind a respectable legacy.

“What does Dad have to do with Emily?”

Margaret didn’t answer.

Emily whispered, “Everything.”

Michael felt the room closing around him.

Then Margaret said something that made his blood run cold.

“There is something underneath this house that your father never wanted you to find.”

Michael stared at the floor.

“What?”

Margaret’s eyes filled with tears.

“A room.”

Before Michael could ask another question, there was a loud sound from beneath them.

A heavy metallic knock.

Once.

Twice.

Then silence.

Michael looked at the floor.

Emily covered her mouth.

Margaret whispered:

“They found us.”

Michael turned toward her.

“Who found us?”

She didn’t answer.

And suddenly, the secret beneath the house seemed far more dangerous than anything he had imagined.
