They Publicly Tore Up the Single Dad Invitation Not Knowing He Owned the Company Signing Their $1B

Chapter 6

Emma had been sick for almost a year.

Daniel remembered every hospital visit.

Every medication.

Every difficult conversation.

But the photograph revealed something he’d never known.

Emma was standing outside a research facility owned by a company that later became a Blackridge subsidiary.

Daniel stared at the image.

“Why was she there?”

Victoria called a former investigative journalist she trusted.

Within hours, they discovered that Emma had worked briefly as a contract analyst for the company before her illness.

Daniel had never known.

He had assumed she had been consulting independently.

But her old records were incomplete.

Some had been deleted.

Daniel felt sick.

“Why would she hide this from me?”

Victoria answered gently.

“Maybe she was protecting you.”

“From what?”

They found the answer in a sealed legal archive.

Emma had discovered evidence of financial fraud involving several executives.

She had planned to report it.

Then she became sick.

Her health deteriorated rapidly.

The case disappeared.

Daniel had always believed those events were unrelated.

Now he wasn’t so sure.

The investigators found correspondence between Emma and a lawyer.

One sentence stood out.

If anything happens to me, protect Daniel and Lily.

Daniel sat in silence.

Victoria reached for his hand.

He squeezed it.

The past had suddenly become part of the present.

Blackridge wasn’t just attacking ColeFlow.

They were protecting an old secret.

Daniel’s grief returned with overwhelming force.

He hadn’t finished mourning his wife.

Not really.

He had simply learned how to function.

That night, Lily found him sitting in the kitchen.

“Are you sad?”

Daniel nodded.

“I miss Mom.”

Lily climbed into his lap.

“I miss her too.”

He hugged her.

“I wish I had told her everything.”

“You can tell me.”

Daniel smiled through tears.

“I love you.”

“I know.”

Victoria watched from the doorway.

She understood then that Daniel wasn’t weak.

He was carrying years of pain without allowing it to make him cruel.

The next morning, they took the evidence to federal investigators.

The authorities reopened the old fraud case.

Within days, subpoenas were issued.

Blackridge executives panicked.

The $1 billion deal became the center of national business attention.

Reporters began asking questions.

Sterling’s board demanded answers.

Victoria stood before them.

“We are not canceling the agreement.”

One director objected.

“This company is under attack.”

Victoria replied:

“Then we’ll defend it.”

Daniel attended the board meeting.

Some directors looked surprised to see him.

One whispered:

“He’s just the founder.”

Daniel heard him.

He said nothing.

Victoria turned toward the room.

“Let me make something clear.”

She pointed toward Daniel.

“This man built the technology your company is depending on.”

Then she added:

“And he has never needed Sterling more than Sterling has needed him.”

Silence.

The director looked away.

After the meeting, Daniel thanked Victoria.

She smiled.

“You don’t need protecting.”

“Maybe not.”

“But?”

“You make it easier.”

She touched his hand.

Then Daniel received another call.

A federal investigator had found a hidden account.

The account belonged to someone neither Daniel nor Victoria had suspected.

Someone inside Sterling’s board.
