They Mocked His Old Car, His Clothes, His Pie… Then His Granddaughter Had Enough

Chapter 13

On Rose’s fifteenth anniversary, Walter held a private gathering at the company headquarters.

He invited farmers.

Drivers.

Bakers.

Warehouse workers.

Employees.

People who had known Rose.

People who had never met her.

At the center of the room was a large photograph.

Rose stood beside a young Walter.

He was wearing the same kind of jacket he still wore.

Lily looked at it.

“You haven’t changed much.”

Walter smiled.

“She wouldn’t let me.”

The event was not about wealth.

It was about a promise.

Walter announced the creation of the Rose Hayes Community Fund.

It would provide grants to small family businesses.

Medical support for employees’ children.

Scholarships.

Food programs.

And funding for local farms.

Lily asked:

“Why now?”

Walter looked at the crowd.

“Because my wife believed businesses exist because people need them.”

The room was silent.

“We forgot that.”

He continued.

“We won’t forget again.”

At the end of the evening, Cynthia approached him.

“I brought something.”

She handed him a box.

Inside was an old photograph.

Rose and Cynthia.

Young.

Laughing.

Both holding pies.

Walter stared.

“She kept that?”

Cynthia nodded.

“She gave it to me when we fought.”

“Why?”

“She wanted me to remember who I was.”

Walter looked at her.

“Do you?”

Cynthia smiled through tears.

“I think I’m finally starting to.”

They hugged.

Across the room, Lily watched.

The woman who had once been an enemy had become part of the family.

Not because she was forgiven without consequences.

Because she had earned another chance.

Later that night, Walter and Lily walked outside.

The city lights stretched across the horizon.

“Grandpa?”

“Yes?”

“Do you ever wish Grandma had told you everything sooner?”

Walter thought.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I would have spent more time with her asking questions.”

Lily smiled.

“But she knew you’d find out eventually.”

Walter nodded.

“She was always patient.”

Then his phone rang.

Jonathan.

Walter answered.

“Hello?”

“Mr. Hayes, there’s a problem.”

“What now?”

“We found an old account.”

Walter sighed.

“How old?”

“Twenty-seven years.”

“Whose?”

“Rose’s.”

Walter stopped.

“What?”

“It contains a transfer.”

“How much?”

Jonathan hesitated.

“Twenty-five million dollars.”

Walter looked at Lily.

“Where did it go?”

“That’s the strange part.”

“To whom?”

Jonathan answered:

“To a person named Lily Carter.”

Lily froze.

“That’s me.”

Walter stared.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“But your full name is Lily Hayes.”

“Exactly.”

Jonathan continued.

“The account was created before you were born.”

Lily’s face went pale.

Walter whispered:

“Why would Rose send twenty-five million dollars to you before you existed?”

Neither had an answer.

Then Jonathan said:

“There is one more thing.”

“What?”

“Your grandmother left instructions.”

“For whom?”

A pause.

“For Lily.”
