They Left Her Alone in the Mountains — Then She Found a Civil War Secret Hidden Under an Old Hearth

Chapter 8

They spent the night hiding in an abandoned hunting shelter.

Emma couldn’t stop staring at the ledger.

“What do they want?”

Noah sat across from her.

“Control.”

“But why now?”

He looked at the newest entries.

“Someone has been updating it.”

“Who?”

“Someone inside the Covenant.”

Emma remembered the man from the cabin.

“Who was he?”

Noah shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Margaret arrived just before sunrise.

She was injured.

She had been shot in the shoulder.

She told them the man was named Grant Holloway.

A wealthy developer who owned much of the surrounding land.

“He’s been looking for the ledger for twenty years.”

“Why?”

“Because his family lost control of the Covenant.”

Margaret explained that the organization had fractured.

One faction wanted to preserve the secret.

Another wanted to use the old wealth and political influence to seize control of several counties.

The ledger was their leverage.

Emma suddenly understood.

“This isn’t about Civil War history.”

“No,” Margaret said.

“It’s about who controls the present.”

Then she revealed something else.

The abandoned church wasn’t merely a hiding place.

It contained an underground archive.

Records from every generation.

Emma asked:

“Why didn’t my grandfather destroy it?”

Margaret looked at her.

“Because he believed the truth should survive.”

They returned to the church.

Behind the chamber was another tunnel.

At the end stood a steel door.

Inside were shelves filled with documents.

Bank records.

Property deeds.

Photographs.

Letters.

Evidence connecting powerful families across generations.

Emma found one final document.

A map.

It showed a buried vault beneath the mountains.

The vault contained the original Union payroll.

And beside the map was a note.

The money was never spent.

Noah stared.

“If the money is still there…”

Margaret nodded.

“Then whoever controls it could finance an entire new empire.”

A voice came from the doorway.

“Exactly.”

Grant Holloway stepped inside.

And he was holding a gun.
