They Left Her Alone in the Mountains — Then She Found a Civil War Secret Hidden Under an Old Hearth
Chapter 6
They found Margaret near an old ranger station.
She was terrified.
Noah drew his weapon as they approached.
Margaret immediately raised her hands.
“I didn’t hurt anyone.”
Emma stepped forward.
“You knew my grandfather.”
Margaret nodded.
“For twenty-eight years.”
“Why?”
Margaret took a breath.
“Because your grandfather asked me to help protect something.”
“The gold?”
Margaret shook her head.
“The people.”
Emma frowned.
“What people?”
“The descendants of the men who stole it.”
Noah looked confused.
Margaret explained that after the Civil War, several powerful families in the region secretly formed an organization called the Covenant.
They used the stolen money to purchase land, businesses, and political influence.
Their descendants maintained the network for generations.
“The gold was only the beginning,” Margaret said.
Emma stared.
“So the secret is still active?”
“Yes.”
“And my grandfather knew?”
“He was one of them.”
Emma stepped back.
“No.”
Margaret looked at her sadly.
“Your grandfather joined the Covenant in 1998.”
“Why?”
“To protect you.”
Emma felt betrayed.
Margaret continued.
“Your grandfather discovered that the organization planned to eliminate anyone who found evidence of its origins.”
“Then why didn’t he expose them?”
“Because they threatened you.”
Emma remembered being twelve years old.
Her grandfather had suddenly become distant.
He stopped allowing her to visit the cabin.
He refused to discuss family history.
Margaret handed her a letter.
“Your grandfather wrote this shortly before he died.”
Emma opened it.
The letter was addressed to her.
Emma,
If you’re reading this, they failed to keep you away from the cabin.
I’m sorry.
The money is not the secret.
The secret is the ledger.
The ledger contains every name of every person who belonged to the Covenant for more than one hundred and fifty years.
Emma looked at Noah.
Margaret continued:
“Your grandfather hid the ledger beneath the hearth.”
Emma’s heart stopped.
“But I found the iron box.”
Margaret shook her head.
“You found the key.”
