They Left Her Alone in the Mountains — Then She Found a Civil War Secret Hidden Under an Old Hearth
Chapter 4
Noah wanted Emma to stay at a hotel.
She refused.
“This is my property.”
“That doesn’t mean it’s safe.”
“I need to find out what my grandfather knew.”
Noah sighed.
“Then I’m staying too.”
That evening, they searched the cabin.
The map showed three locations.
The first was beneath the hearth.
The second was an abandoned church.
The third was a mountain ridge.
Noah suggested they start with the church.
They left at dawn.
The church stood deep in the forest.
Its roof had collapsed decades ago.
Trees grew through the floor.
Emma found another symbol carved into a stone near the entrance.
Two crossed swords.
The same symbol from the iron box.
They searched the ruins.
Nothing.
Then Noah noticed a stone slab beneath the weeds.
They cleared it.
A narrow staircase descended into darkness.
The tunnel below was surprisingly intact.
Inside, the walls were reinforced with timber.
Emma found markings carved into the wood.
Names.
Dates.
Arrows.
They followed the passage for nearly fifty yards.
Then it opened into a small underground chamber.
At the center stood an old wooden table.
On it was a rusted lantern.
And beside it, a metal cylinder.
Emma opened it.
Inside was a handwritten journal.
The first page read:
October 19, 1864.
Samuel Carter had written it.
The entries described the Union payroll shipment.
But there was something else.
Samuel claimed that the soldiers transporting the money had been ambushed by men wearing Confederate uniforms.
Yet Samuel recognized several of them.
They were not soldiers.
They were local businessmen, landowners, and officials.
They had created a secret organization.
Their goal was to steal the money and use it to finance a private militia after the war.
Emma turned the page.
Samuel had written:
The war will end. Their war will not.
Noah looked over her shoulder.
“That’s what the note meant.”
Emma continued reading.
Samuel had hidden the gold.
Not for himself.
He had hidden it because he discovered the men planned to use it to purchase weapons and continue fighting long after the Confederacy collapsed.
But the final page was missing.
Only one sentence remained.
Colonel Mercer knows where I hid it.
Then footsteps echoed from the tunnel.
Emma and Noah looked at each other.
Someone was coming.
