Ten years after the first morning, Michael and Victoria returned to the same subway entrance.
It was raining again.
Lily was now twenty.
She had just been accepted into veterinary school.
She took a photograph of them.
“Smile.”
Michael laughed.
Victoria looked at him.
“This place still looks exactly the same.”
“No.”
“What changed?”
“Us.”
She smiled.
They stood beneath the awning.
Michael remembered being forty-one.
The interview.
The rain.
The stranger.
The ambulance.
The missed opportunity.
Victoria remembered lying on the pavement.
Scared.
Frustrated.
Then hearing a stranger say:
“She needs help.”
Neither had known what was coming.
They had both assumed they were losing something.
Michael thought he was losing a job.
Victoria thought she was losing control.
Instead, both found something better.
One evening, Victoria asked:
“If you had known who I was that morning, would you still have helped me?”
Michael laughed.
“Probably.”
“Probably?”
“Maybe I would’ve tried to get there faster.”
She smiled.
“Good answer.”
