The Sheriff Forced Her Off Her Land — So She Built a Hidden Mountain Ranch They Never Knew Existed

Chapter 5

Megan found the answer.

She called Clara late one evening.

“I found the original survey notes.”

“Who changed them?”

“Judge Robert Hale.”

Clara froze.

Hale had been the county judge twenty-five years earlier.

He was dead now.

But his family wasn’t.

His son was currently a partner in Western Ridge Development.

Clara understood.

The land grab had been planned for decades.

Her grandfather had probably discovered it.

That’s why he had kept the valley secret.

Megan continued:

“There’s more.”

“What?”

“The county was supposed to recognize the valley’s water rights.”

“They didn’t.”

“Correct.”

“Why?”

“The file was removed.”

“By who?”

“Someone working for the county.”

Clara looked toward the mountains.

Everything pointed back to the same group.

Hale’s family.

Western Ridge.

Wade.

Maybe others.

Clara needed proof connecting the past to the present.

She returned to the hidden archive.

Her grandfather’s papers contained something she hadn’t noticed.

An old photograph.

Five men standing outside the county courthouse.

Her grandfather.

Judge Hale.

Wade’s father.

A land developer.

And another man.

Clara didn’t recognize him.

She turned the photograph over.

A date.

Then a note.

They wanted the water even then.

Clara stared.

Her family had known for generations.

This wasn’t a recent dispute.

It was a campaign.

Over decades, people had tried to gain control of the land.

Her father had resisted.

Then her mother.

Now her.

Clara smiled.

“You’re still here.”

She was talking to her family.

They hadn’t lost.

They had simply passed the fight forward.

She contacted Megan.

“We need to take this public.”

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“We need to know who is still involved.”

Megan sent her a name.

The current county commissioner.

Evan Hale.

Judge Hale’s grandson.

Clara searched his public records.

Western Ridge had donated to his election campaign.

The pattern was undeniable.

Then another name appeared.

Sheriff Wade Mercer.

He had received campaign support from Western Ridge too.

Clara closed her eyes.

Wade wasn’t innocent.

But maybe he wasn’t the mastermind either.

She decided to confront him.

He arrived alone.

This time, he looked exhausted.

Clara showed him the photograph.

He stared.

“I knew about the old deal.”

“But?”

“I didn’t know how far it went.”

“You knew the eviction order was false.”

He looked away.

“Yes.”

“You signed it.”

“I was pressured.”

“By Crane?”

“By the county.”

“Why?”

“Because they threatened my family.”

Clara studied him.

“Then help me.”

“How?”

“Tell the truth.”

Wade looked at her.

“You don’t understand what that will cost.”

Clara smiled.

“I’ve already lost my ranch.”

He sighed.

“Give me time.”

“How much?”

“Two days.”

She nodded.

He left.

For the first time, Clara had an ally inside the system.

But she didn’t know whether she could trust him.
