The Mafia Boss Locked the Door After Midnight — Then His Secretary Whispered Why She Was Leaving

Chapter 2

Vincent stared at her as though she had spoken another language.

“Pregnant?”

Isabella nodded.

She had imagined telling him many times.

Never like this.

Never with a locked door between them.

She lowered her eyes.

“I’m eleven weeks.”

Vincent slowly sat down.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he asked:

“Does anyone else know?”

“My doctor.”

“Your family?”

“No.”

“Your mother?”

“No.”

“Anyone in this organization?”

“No.”

Vincent rubbed his forehead.

“Does the father know?”

Isabella looked at him.

“Yes.”

Vincent’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?”

She didn’t answer.

He stood.

“Isabella.”

“You know him.”

His expression changed.

“Who?”

She placed a hand over her stomach.

“Your brother.”

The room went silent.

Rain struck the windows.

Vincent looked as though the floor had disappeared beneath him.

“Marco?”

Isabella nodded.

“He isn’t dead.”

Vincent’s jaw tightened.

“I know.”

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I didn’t know where he was.”

Isabella stepped backward.

“You knew he was alive?”

“I knew someone had been using his old network.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

Vincent looked at her.

“Marco disappeared after he tried to kill me.”

Isabella’s eyes widened.

“What?”

“Six years ago, he betrayed the family.”

“He told me he was trying to escape.”

Vincent laughed bitterly.

“He always said that.”

“He never told me about you.”

“He didn’t want you to know.”

Isabella’s voice became quiet.

“He loved me.”

Vincent’s expression hardened.

“My brother doesn’t love people.”

“You don’t know him.”

“I know him better than anyone.”

Isabella shook her head.

“You’re wrong.”

Vincent walked toward the desk.

He opened another drawer and removed a photograph.

It showed Marco standing beside Isabella outside a small café.

They were laughing.

Isabella had never seen the picture.

“When was this taken?”

“Two years ago.”

Vincent looked at her.

“He was already watching you.”

She stared at the photograph.

“Why?”

“Because he needed something.”

“What?”

“You.”

Isabella shook her head.

“No.”

Vincent placed another document on the desk.

It was a financial report.

Several accounts had been opened using Isabella’s name.

Money had moved through them.

Millions of dollars.

Isabella’s face went pale.

“I didn’t do this.”

“I know.”

“Then who did?”

“Marco.”

She looked at him.

“Why would he use my identity?”

“To hide money.”

Isabella’s breathing became shallow.

“So I’m being hunted because of something I didn’t do.”

“Yes.”

She looked toward the locked door.

“Then why am I still here?”

Vincent walked closer.

“Because if you leave tonight, they’ll find you.”

“Who?”

“My enemies.”

“And Marco?”

Vincent hesitated.

“He isn’t the only one.”

Isabella felt the baby move faintly.

She placed her hand over her stomach.

Vincent noticed.

Something softened in his expression.

“You need protection.”

“I don’t want protection from you.”

“I’m not asking.”

“You can’t order me around.”

“I can tonight.”

Isabella glared at him.

“I’m not one of your employees anymore.”

Vincent stared at her.

Then he unlocked the door.

“You’re right.”

He stepped aside.

“You’re not.”

She walked toward the hallway.

Before she could leave, Vincent spoke.

“Isabella.”

She stopped.

“If Marco contacts you…”

She turned.

“Don’t meet him alone.”

“Why?”

Vincent’s voice was barely above a whisper.

“Because the man you loved six years ago may not be the man who’s looking for you now.”
