The Mafia Boss Locked the Door After Midnight — Then His Secretary Whispered Why She Was Leaving
Chapter 4
By morning, Isabella had learned one thing.
Trusting Vincent was dangerous.
But trusting nobody might be even more dangerous.
They left the apartment before sunrise.
Vincent took her to a private house outside Chicago.
It belonged to no company.
No family member knew about it.
Only three people had access.
Vincent.
His security chief, Gabriel Stone.
And an elderly woman named Teresa.
Teresa had worked for the Moretti family for more than thirty years.
She immediately hugged Isabella.
“You’re the girl Marco loved.”
Isabella stiffened.
“You knew?”
Teresa smiled sadly.
“Everyone who truly knew him knew.”
Vincent looked annoyed.
“Teresa.”
“What?”
“Not now.”
She ignored him.
“He talked about you.”
“When?”
“Before he disappeared.”
Isabella sat down.
“What did he say?”
Teresa glanced at Vincent.
“He said he had made one terrible mistake.”
“What mistake?”
“He trusted the wrong person.”
Vincent’s expression darkened.
“Who?”
Teresa shook her head.
“He never said.”
Gabriel entered the room.
“Boss.”
Vincent turned.
“What?”
“We found the vehicle.”
“Whose?”
“The man who followed Isabella last night.”
“Where?”
“Outside her apartment.”
Gabriel placed photographs on the table.
A black SUV.
Its license plate had been altered.
But there was something else.
A symbol on the windshield.
A small silver raven.
Vincent stared at it.
“That’s impossible.”
Isabella looked at him.
“What?”
Vincent picked up the photograph.
“The Raven Group.”
Gabriel nodded.
“They were supposed to be gone.”
“Who are they?”
Vincent’s face became cold.
“An organization my father created before I took control.”
Isabella looked between them.
“Why would they want me?”
“They don’t.”
Vincent paused.
“They want your child.”
Isabella instinctively covered her stomach.
“Why?”
“Because Marco had access to something they need.”
“What?”
“A ledger.”
“What kind of ledger?”
“A record of every illegal transaction my father made before he died.”
Isabella frowned.
“And Marco has it?”
“We think so.”
“Why would they need my baby?”
Vincent looked at her.
“Because Marco hid the access key inside something only his child would inherit.”
Isabella stared.
“You’re saying my baby is the key?”
Vincent nodded.
She laughed nervously.
“That sounds insane.”
“I wish it were.”
Gabriel placed another photograph on the table.
Marco.
Standing beside a hospital.
Six weeks ago.
Isabella’s breath caught.
“He’s alive.”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“We don’t know.”
Vincent stared at the photograph.
“But now we know why he’s been hiding.”
Isabella stood.
“I want to find him.”
“No.”
“I’m carrying his child.”
“That is exactly why you stay here.”
“He deserves to know.”
Vincent looked at her.
“He knows.”
“What?”
“He called me yesterday.”
Isabella froze.
“What did he say?”
Vincent hesitated.
“He said if anything happened to you, I would regret every decision I’ve ever made.”
She stared.
“What does that mean?”
Vincent looked away.
“I don’t know.”
Teresa suddenly spoke.
“I do.”
Everyone turned.
She held an old envelope.
“Marco left this with me.”
She handed it to Isabella.
Her name was written on the front.
Inside was one sentence.
When the door is locked after midnight, ask why she’s leaving.
Isabella frowned.
“Who’s she?”
Teresa looked at Vincent.
Then at Isabella.
“The woman your father-in-law trusted most.”
Vincent’s face went pale.
“My father’s secretary?”
Teresa nodded.
“She disappeared the night he died.”
