THE GIRL WHO STAYED FOR ONLY ONE SUMMER
Chapter 6
For several weeks, they didn’t talk about the future.
They lived inside the present.
And it was good.
Better than good.
It was easy.
Ethan would finish work.
Maya would be waiting.
Sometimes she cooked.
Usually badly.
Ethan would complain.
She would laugh.
They would eat anyway.
She began leaving clothes at his house.
A sweater.
A pair of boots.
A toothbrush.
A book beside his bed.
Small things.
Dangerous things.
Evidence that someone was staying.
One night, Ethan opened a drawer and found a roll of film.
“What is this?”
Maya looked over.
“Photos.”
“Of what?”
“You.”
He stared.
“Why do you have film?”
“Because digital cameras don’t feel the same.”
“What’s on it?”
She smiled.
“Something you’ll see later.”
He put it back.
He didn’t know then that the photographs would become the most painful thing she left behind.
