THE GIRL WHO STAYED FOR ONLY ONE SUMMER

Chapter 5

It happened after a storm.

The electricity had gone out across half the town.

The hotel closed early.

Ethan and Maya walked to his house carrying flashlights.

Rain dripped from their jackets.

Inside, they lit candles.

The house felt smaller.

Warmer.

Maya sat on the kitchen counter.

Ethan made coffee on the gas stove.

She watched him.

“You know what I like about you?”

Ethan turned.

“What?”

“You don’t ask questions.”

“I ask plenty.”

“Not the important ones.”

He turned off the stove.

“What are the important ones?”

Maya looked at him.

“Where I’m going.”

Ethan’s expression changed.

“You’ve been planning to leave.”

She looked down.

“I always leave.”

“Why?”

She swallowed.

“Because staying makes things harder.”

“How?”

“People start expecting you to be there.”

Ethan understood.

He knew that fear.

“That’s not always bad.”

“For you, maybe.”

“Why?”

“Because you’ve finally decided to stay.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“And you haven’t.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

The room went quiet.

Rain struck the windows.

Maya looked at him.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For what I’m about to do.”

She kissed him.

Ethan froze for half a second.

Then kissed her back.

There was nothing dramatic about it.

No music.

No perfect lighting.

Just candlelight.

Rain.

Two people who knew they were standing at the edge of something they couldn’t keep.

When they separated, Maya rested her forehead against his.

“I shouldn’t have done that.”

Ethan whispered:

“I know.”

Neither moved.

Then she kissed him again.

This time, neither pretended it was a mistake.
