The tension between them became impossible to ignore.

Maya refused to begin anything while Alexander still had complete authority over her position.
So Alexander changed the structure.
The board appointed an independent executive committee.
Maya’s position became protected from unilateral CEO decisions.
Alexander told her privately.
“Now there are boundaries.”
She looked at him.
“You planned this?”
“I planned to make sure you never had to choose between your career and your feelings.”
Maya smiled.
“That was surprisingly thoughtful.”
“I’m learning.”
She laughed.
Their first real date was almost awkward.
They went to a small Italian restaurant.
No assistants.
No executives.
No security.
Just two people trying to figure out what happened after work.
Maya asked about his childhood.
Alexander told her about growing up in a family where failure was treated like humiliation.
“My father believed winning was the only way to survive.”
Maya looked at him.
“That explains a lot.”
“What about you?”
“My father taught me something different.”
“What?”
“That money can give you opportunities.”
“And?”
“It can’t tell you who you are.”
Alexander smiled.
“That sounds like something you live by.”
“I try.”
Their relationship became quiet.
Private.
Honest.
But someone noticed.
Thomas Grant had not disappeared from the story.
While under investigation, he discovered Alexander and Maya’s relationship.
He saw an opportunity.
He began leaking information.
Anonymous reports accused Maya of using her father’s influence to take control of Hawthorne.
Another claimed she had manipulated Alexander.
Then the biggest accusation appeared.
Maya was supposedly planning to force Alexander out and take over the company.
The board demanded answers.
Alexander defended her immediately.
Maya stopped him.
“No.”
He stared.
“You don’t have to protect me.”
“I do.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“Let them investigate.”
“I trust you.”
“I know.”
She looked at him.
“But trust isn’t evidence.”
