The CEO Fired Her in Front of Everyone, But He Had No Idea Who She Was
Chapter 14
Ten years after the day Maya was fired, she was forty-three.
Alexander was fifty-one.
Their careers had changed.
Their company had changed.
Their family had changed.
Maya and Alexander now had a daughter of their own.
Her name was Claire.
She was six years old.
One Saturday morning, Maya brought Claire to Hawthorne’s headquarters.
The little girl ran through the lobby.
“Mom!”
Maya laughed.
“Slow down.”
Alexander walked toward them.
“She’s faster than both of us.”
Claire looked up at him.
“Daddy, is this your big building?”
“Yes.”
“Did Mommy work here?”
“She did.”
Claire looked at Maya.
“Was Mommy the boss?”
Maya smiled.
“Not at first.”
“What was she?”
Alexander answered.
“Someone who told me when I was wrong.”
Claire giggled.
“Did you listen?”
“Eventually.”
Maya laughed.
They walked to an old display case.
Inside was the cardboard box from the day Maya had been fired.
Claire looked at it.
“What’s that?”
Maya knelt beside her.
“It reminds me that sometimes losing something can lead you somewhere better.”
Claire didn’t fully understand.
“Like when I lost my toy?”
“Exactly.”
Alexander smiled.
“But with much more paperwork.”
Claire laughed.
Maya stood.
She looked through the glass doors.
The same lobby.
The same marble.
The same place where she had once walked away humiliated.
But now she was standing there with her husband and daughter.
Not because she had inherited power.
Not because her father had protected her.
But because she had built something of her own.
Alexander took her hand.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
“What are you thinking?”
Maya smiled.
“That I wouldn’t change anything.”
“Not even the firing?”
“Especially not the firing.”
He laughed.
