Maya had no intention of returning.
She spent the morning at Bennett Capital’s private office.
Her father sat across from her.
“You were fired.”
“Yes.”
“In front of the executive team?”
“Yes.”
William shook his head.
“He has terrible judgment.”
Maya smiled.
“You’ve been saying that since I was twelve.”
“Because you keep proving me right.”
She laughed.
Her father looked serious.
“Do you want me to remove Alexander?”
Maya paused.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because that would be too easy.”
William raised an eyebrow.
“What do you want?”
“I want the truth to come out.”
“And then?”
Maya looked at the files.
“Then I want to see whether he can fix what he broke.”
William smiled.
“You have more patience than I did at your age.”
“That’s because I learned from watching you make mistakes.”
He laughed.
Maya returned to the investigation.
She had discovered that the Northbridge fraud was only one part of a larger scheme.
Money had been redirected through three consulting firms.
All three were connected to Thomas Grant.
But there was another name.
Ethan Cole.
Chief Operating Officer.
Maya stared at the screen.
Ethan had always seemed trustworthy.
He had helped her early in her career.
He had supported several of her reports.
Now she wasn’t sure.
She contacted him privately.
“Ethan, I need to ask you something.”
“Sure.”
“Did you know about the Northbridge contract?”
Silence.
“That depends.”
“On what?”
“Who is asking?”
Maya frowned.
“You know exactly who I am.”
“Yes.”
“Then answer me.”
Ethan sighed.
“I knew the contract had problems.”
“Did Alexander?”
“I don’t know.”
Maya closed her eyes.
“Did Thomas?”
Another pause.
“Yes.”
The call ended.
Maya sat back.
She had her answer.
Thomas was guilty.
But Ethan knew enough to be involved.
She sent the new evidence to the legal team.
Then her father entered.
“There is a board meeting tomorrow.”
“I know.”
“They’re asking whether you will attend.”
Maya looked up.
“I will.”
“Why?”
She smiled.
“Because I want to see his face when he realizes what he fired.”
