One afternoon, she walked into her father’s office.
“Dad?”

“I found something.”
Ethan looked up.
“That sentence never ends well.”
She placed a document on his desk.
He read it.
An aviation supplier had reported a safety concern.
The company’s response was vague.
“Where did you find this?”
“School project.”
He looked at Sophia.
She had entered the room.
“What?”
“Your daughter found a problem.”
Sophia smiled.
“She gets that from you.”
Ethan handed Lily the file.
“What do you think?”
“I think someone is hiding something.”
Ethan smiled.
“Then ask questions.”
That became the philosophy of their family.

One evening, Ethan and Sophia returned to the first apartment he had rented after losing his aviation job.
They stood outside.
“Why are we here?”
Sophia asked.
Ethan smiled.
“Because I wanted you to see something.”
He unlocked the old storage unit.
Inside was a box.
He opened it.
The wooden airplane Lily had chosen at the farmer’s market years ago was inside.
Sophia smiled.
“You kept this?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because it was the first thing you ever bought for Lily.”
Sophia touched it.
“I forgot.”
“I didn’t.”
He handed it to her.
She looked at him.
“Do you regret any of it?”
“What?”
“Loving me.”
He laughed.
“Never.”
“Even when my father almost got you killed?”
“Especially then.”
She frowned.
“That makes no sense.”
“I learned something.”
“What?”
“Life isn’t about avoiding danger.”
He took her hand.
“It’s about choosing the people worth facing it with.”
Sophia smiled.
They kissed.
At home that night, Lily asked,
“Why were you guys gone so long?”
Ethan looked at Sophia.
“Memory lane.”
“What does that mean?”
Sophia answered,
“It means we remembered how we met.”
Lily smiled.
“You’ve told me that story a hundred times.”
“And you’ll hear it a hundred more.”
“Why?”
“Because it reminds us.”
“Of what?”
Ethan looked at Sophia.
“That the best things don’t always come in the package you expect.”
Lily laughed.
“That’s very cheesy.”
“I know.”
A few weeks later, Carter Aviation Safety Group received a national award.
Ethan was asked to speak.
He stood before thousands of industry professionals.
“I used to think losing my career was the worst thing that ever happened to me.”
He paused.
“I was wrong.”
He looked at Sophia sitting in the front row.
“Losing that career forced me to meet the woman who changed my life.”
The audience applauded.
Sophia smiled.
Then Ethan continued.
“People ask me how I ended up marrying a billionaire’s daughter.”
He laughed.
“I tell them I didn’t.”
The audience grew quiet.
“I married Sophia.”
That sentence became the most quoted line of his speech.
Because it captured everything.
He hadn’t fallen in love with her money.
