Lena’s first birthday with Daniel was difficult.
She was twenty-nine.
But emotionally, she felt much younger.
Daniel asked:
“What do you want?”
“Nothing.”
“You always say that.”
“I mean it.”
He smiled.
“I don’t.”
She laughed.
He gave her a small box.
Inside was the original photograph of Lily’s sixth birthday.
He had restored it.
Lena stared.
“I remember this.”
“Do you?”
“A little.”
“You hated that cake.”
She laughed.
“Why?”
“It had coconut.”
“I still hate coconut.”
Daniel smiled.
“Good.”
That was the first time they truly laughed like family.
Later that evening, Lena asked:
“Why didn’t you have more children?”
Daniel hesitated.
“I wanted to.”
“But?”
“I couldn’t.”
“Because of Mom?”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“Because I never knew if you were coming back.”
She understood.
He had never replaced her.
Never stopped waiting.
That knowledge changed their bond.
Lena began spending more time at his house.
She still had her apartment.
But she visited.
They cooked.
Watched movies.
Argued about politics.
Discussed art.
She started teasing him.
“You’re terrible at decorating.”
“I own several buildings.”
“That doesn’t mean you have taste.”
He laughed.
The mansion slowly became a home.
Not because of furniture.
Because Lena was there.
Daniel’s employees noticed he changed.
He smiled more.
Stayed later with family, not work.
Took weekends off.
He even attended Lena’s art classes.
One day, she showed him a portrait.
It was him.
Older.
Tired.
But smiling.
Daniel stared.
“You made me look happy.”
“You are.”
“Was I?”
“Now.”
He couldn’t speak.
She hugged him.
That night, Daniel realized he had spent twenty-two years thinking the goal was finding his daughter.
The real goal was giving her a life she had missed.
But Lena didn’t want to be rescued.
She wanted to build one.
