The Billionaire Froze When He Found His Missing Daughter Cleaning Floors in His Own Company
Chapter 4
Daniel asked Lena to meet him that evening.
She arrived confused.
He stood when she entered.
She looked nervous.
“What happened?”
Daniel couldn’t find the right words.
He took a breath.
“Do you remember the photograph?”
“Yes.”
“The bracelet?”
“Yes.”
“I had it tested.”
Lena’s face went pale.
“What did it say?”
Daniel looked at her.
“You are my daughter.”
Silence.
Lena stared.
“No.”
“I know this is a lot.”
“My father is dead.”
“You don’t know that.”
“My mother said he abandoned us.”
“She lied.”
Lena stepped back.
“Don’t.”
Daniel didn’t move.
“I didn’t know where you were.”
“I didn’t know you existed.”
“I searched for you.”
She began crying.
“I don’t understand.”
He showed her the DNA report.
She read it.
Her hands shook.
“It’s real.”
“Yes.”
She sat down.
Daniel remained across from her.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Then Lena whispered:
“My whole life is a lie.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Your life is real.”
“But everything I was told…”
“That was the lie.”
She cried harder.
Daniel wanted to hug her.
He didn’t.
He waited.
Finally, she said:
“Why didn’t you find me?”
“I tried.”
“For how long?”
“Twenty-two years.”
She looked at him.
“I thought nobody wanted me.”
Daniel’s expression broke.
“I wanted you every day.”
Lena looked away.
Then asked:
“Why was I taken?”
Daniel answered:
“I don’t know.”
“I need to know.”
“So do I.”
They began investigating Margaret Brooks.
The evidence was overwhelming.
Margaret had worked at St. Mary’s.
She had access to Lily’s records.
She had been close to Rebecca.
She had disappeared with Lily shortly after Rebecca’s accident.
Financial transfers showed she had received money from someone connected to Rebecca’s former business partner.
That person was Charles Bennett.
Charles had been Daniel’s former CFO.
Years earlier, he had embezzled millions from the company.
Daniel had exposed him.
Charles had gone to prison.
He had threatened Daniel.
But he had never mentioned Lily.
Now Daniel understood.
Charles had used Margaret to create leverage.
But why?
The answer was in old court documents.
Rebecca had discovered Charles’s financial fraud and threatened to expose him.
Charles had wanted her silent.
He had arranged for Rebecca to be frightened into leaving.
But during the chaos, Lily disappeared.
Margaret had taken her.
Why?
Because Margaret’s own daughter had died as a baby.
She had become obsessed with the idea of raising Lily.
She took her.
Then Charles paid her to keep quiet.
Margaret had told Lily that her father abandoned her.
She changed her name.
Moved states.
Created a new life.
Lena had never known she was stolen.
Daniel was devastated.
The truth was horrific.
But it also explained everything.
The missing records.
The bracelet.
The song.
The age.
The resemblance.
The life lived under another identity.
Daniel wanted to confront Margaret immediately.
Lena asked to come.
He refused.
“Not yet.”
“Why?”
“Because you deserve time.”
“I deserve answers.”
“You’ll get them.”
Lena looked at him.
“I want to meet her.”
Daniel hesitated.
“Are you sure?”
“She raised me.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“She stole you.”
“I know.”
“She lied to you.”
“I know.”
“But she was still my mother.”
Daniel understood.
Lena had spent twenty-eight years believing Margaret was her only family.
Truth didn’t erase attachment.
It complicated it.
Daniel agreed.
They arranged a controlled meeting.
Margaret arrived with a lawyer.
She looked at Lena.
Then Daniel.
She knew immediately.
“You found her.”
Daniel’s voice was cold.
“You took my daughter.”
Margaret cried.
“I loved her.”
“You stole her.”
“I couldn’t lose another child.”
“That doesn’t give you the right.”
“No.”
She nodded.
“I’m sorry.”
Lena stared at her.
“Why did you do it?”
Margaret cried.
“Because I was broken.”
Lena’s voice shook.
“And what about me?”
Margaret had no answer.
Daniel stepped closer.
“You stole twenty-two years from both of us.”
Margaret whispered:
“I know.”
The meeting ended.
Police took her into custody for questioning.
Lena sat alone afterward.
Daniel sat beside her.
She looked at him.
“I don’t know what to call you.”
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“You don’t have to call me anything yet.”
She nodded.
“Can I call you Daniel?”
He smiled through tears.
“Yes.”
“Okay.”
That was the beginning.
Not father and daughter.
Not yet.
Just two strangers who shared the same blood and twenty-two years of lost history.
