Victoria was preparing for a board meeting when Amelia walked into her office carrying a photograph.
“Do you remember this?”
Victoria looked up.

It was an old photograph from university.
Victoria and Ethan stood together near a lake.
They were young.
Happy.
Uncomplicated.
She took the photograph.
“Where did you find it?”
“Mom’s storage boxes.”
Victoria stared at it.
“I thought this was gone.”
Amelia sat down.
“There’s more.”
She placed several letters on the desk.
Victoria read the first.
The handwriting belonged to their father.
Her stomach tightened.
She read faster.
The letters described Ethan as a threat to the family’s reputation.
He had ordered people to keep Ethan away from Victoria.
He had told Victoria that Ethan had stolen money.
Victoria remembered the story.
Ethan had supposedly taken a large amount of company money and left town.
But there had never been a trial.
No arrest.
No official explanation.
Victoria had asked questions.
Her father always told her:
“He abandoned you.”
She had believed him.
For ten years.
She looked at Amelia.
“Where did you get these?”
“From a locked cabinet.”
“Why didn’t you show me before?”
“Because I didn’t know what they meant.”
Victoria stood.
“What happened to Dad’s old attorney?”
“Retired.”
“Find him.”
Amelia nodded.
Victoria looked at the photograph again.
Her fingers trembled.
She had spent ten years blaming Ethan.
She had compared every man to him.
And now she was beginning to wonder whether the man she thought had abandoned her had actually been driven away.
Amelia stood.
“There is something else.”
Victoria looked up.
“What?”
“Ethan is back.”
The room went silent.
Victoria’s heart stopped.
“How do you know?”
“He was seen at the Hartwell charity office this morning.”
Victoria couldn’t breathe.
