The Beautiful Strange Woman Arrived at the Wrong Ranch by Mistake—Then She Saved the Cowboy’s Future

Chapter 6

The next morning, the first major break came.

Gregory Wells contacted Clara.

He wanted immunity.

In exchange, he would testify.

Clara arranged a meeting with law enforcement.

Gregory revealed that the forged lien had been created through Blackstone.

The bank had been pressured.

Thomas Harper had paid for the paperwork.

And one person inside the county government had approved false property records.

The conspiracy was real.

But Gregory had one more piece.

“The original agreement is in Thomas Harper’s office.”

“Can you get it?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because he keeps it locked.”

Clara frowned.

“Where?”

“His private ranch office.”

Ethan looked at her.

“We can get a warrant.”

Gregory shook his head.

“He’ll destroy it before you do.”

So they needed another way.

Ethan remembered something his grandfather had once taught him.

“When someone hides something in a locked office, they usually forget the old place.”

“The old place?”

“My grandfather’s office.”

It hadn’t been used in twenty years.

Ethan and Clara searched it.

They found old ledgers.

Tax records.

Letters.

And a small key.

Clara studied it.

“What’s this?”

Ethan didn’t know.

They tried every lock.

None worked.

Then they remembered the old water tower.

Ethan’s grandfather had kept tools there.

The key opened a metal cabinet.

Inside was a tape recorder.

And a cassette.

Clara looked at Ethan.

“This could be it.”

They found an old player.

The recording began.

Thomas Harper’s father was speaking.

He discussed the plan.

Buy the surrounding land.

Manipulate the bank.

Wait for the Cole family to collapse.

Then acquire the ranch.

Ethan listened in silence.

His grandfather’s voice appeared near the end.

“You’ll never take it.”

The recording stopped.

Clara looked at Ethan.

“That proves intent.”

“It proves they planned this for decades.”

She smiled.

“We have enough.”

Then the farmhouse phone rang.

Ethan answered.

A voice said,

“You should have sold.”

Then the line went dead.

Five minutes later, a fire started near the barn.

Ethan and Clara ran outside.

Smoke filled the air.

The fire department arrived quickly.

The barn was damaged.

But nobody was hurt.

Ethan stared at the flames.

Everything he had worked for could have disappeared in minutes.

Clara stood beside him.

“We’re not giving up.”

He looked at her.

“I know.”

She touched his arm.

He covered her hand with his.

The fire was controlled.

The sheriff arrived.

So did investigators.

And this time, the county stopped treating Ethan like a debtor.

They started treating him like a victim.

But Thomas Harper was gone.

His ranch office was empty.

His phone was off.

And the man who had spent twenty years planning to take Ethan’s land had disappeared before the case could reach court.
