The Beautiful Strange Woman Arrived at the Wrong Ranch by Mistake—Then She Saved the Cowboy’s Future

Chapter 5

The threat changed everything.

Ethan moved Clara into the farmhouse.

He didn’t want her alone.

She protested.

“This is your home.”

“Then you’re safer here.”

“Ethan.”

“Please.”

She stopped arguing.

For the next several days, they worked together constantly.

Clara investigated the forged lien.

Ethan contacted every person who had worked with his grandfather.

Most remembered nothing.

Then an elderly rancher named Walter Briggs called.

“I know why they’re after you.”

Ethan drove to his property.

Clara came with him.

Walter was eighty-two.

He sat on his porch overlooking a dry creek.

“Your grandfather and mine used to talk.”

“About the aquifer?”

Walter nodded.

“They knew someone would eventually come for it.”

“Why didn’t they protect it better?”

“They did.”

Walter looked at Clara.

“Her grandfather helped.”

Clara leaned forward.

“What did he do?”

“He created a private survey archive.”

“Where?”

“Beneath the old schoolhouse.”

The schoolhouse had been abandoned for forty years.

Ethan and Clara went there the next morning.

The building was collapsing.

They searched the basement.

Nothing.

Then Clara noticed a brick that looked different.

She pulled it.

A small metal box appeared.

Inside were survey maps.

Legal agreements.

And a handwritten statement.

Thomas Hayes had documented every attempt by the Harper family to claim the water rights.

But there was more.

He had also documented a secret agreement between the Harpers and Blackstone Agricultural Partners.

The agreement was dated twenty years earlier.

Ethan stared.

“They planned this before I was even born.”

Clara nodded.

“They’ve been waiting.”

She read another page.

“They intended to force your family into bankruptcy.”

“Why?”

“Because they needed the ranch land to become financially distressed.”

Ethan clenched his jaw.

The final page contained a list of payments.

Bank employees.

Surveyors.

Local officials.

Everyone who had helped.

One name stood out.

Gregory Wells.

The missing loan officer.

They finally knew.

The foreclosure was deliberately engineered.

But they still needed proof that could survive court.

Clara photographed everything.

Then footsteps came from upstairs.

They froze.

A door slammed.

Ethan whispered,

“Stay here.”

He climbed the stairs.

Nobody.

The back door was open.

Clara followed.

“Did you see anyone?”

“No.”

Ethan looked at the snow outside.

Fresh tracks.

Someone had been watching them.

They returned to the ranch.

That night, Clara couldn’t sleep.

She found Ethan in the kitchen.

“You awake?”

“Yes.”

She sat down.

“I think I brought this to your ranch.”

“You didn’t.”

“My case led them here.”

“They were already here.”

She looked at him.

“You don’t have to protect me.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

He answered honestly.

“Because I want to.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Ethan…”

He took her hand.

“Whatever happens, you don’t face it alone.”

She nodded.

For a moment, they looked at each other.

Then Clara whispered,

“I think I’m falling in love with you.”

Ethan froze.

He had felt it too.

But neither had said it.

He squeezed her hand.

“I think I already did.”
