The Airline Fired a Single Dad—Hours Later, a Jet Lost Both Engines
Chapter 6
By that evening, Marcus’s story had begun spreading online.
A former airline maintenance supervisor says he warned his employer about the aircraft later involved in a major emergency.
The airline denied the allegations.
Daniel Price appeared on television.
“We followed all required procedures,” he said.
Marcus watched from his living room.
Ava sat beside him eating popcorn.
“Is that your old boss?”
“Yes.”
“He doesn’t look nice.”
Marcus smiled.
“He’s on television.”
“So?”
“So television makes everyone look serious.”
Ava considered this.
Then asked,
“Did you fix the airplane?”
Marcus looked at her.
“No.”
“You tried.”
“Yes.”
She nodded.
“Then you’re still a hero.”
Marcus’s throat tightened.
He kissed her forehead.
Later that night, Marcus received an encrypted message.
COME TO HANGAR 14 ALONE.
No name.
No explanation.
He showed Elena.
“It’s a trap,” she said.
“Probably.”
“You’re not going.”
Marcus stared at the message.
“Hangar 14 has access to the original fuel samples.”
Elena looked at him.
“How do you know?”
“I supervised the evidence storage.”
“Then we don’t go alone.”
They arrived with Rebecca and two federal investigators.
Inside the hangar was an engine from Flight 611.
The investigators opened the access panel.
Marcus inspected the fuel line.
There was a residue.
Dark.
Sticky.
The same smell.
He froze.
“This isn’t normal fuel contamination.”
“What is it?”
Marcus took a sample.
“Hydraulic fluid.”
Rebecca stared.
“How did hydraulic fluid get into the fuel?”
Marcus pointed to a maintenance coupling.
“This connector was replaced.”
The investigator checked the records.
“By who?”
Marcus read the name.
A technician named Paul Danner.
He didn’t recognize it.
Rebecca did.
“Danner quit two months ago.”
“Where is he?”
“We don’t know.”
Marcus inspected the connector.
The seals had been intentionally altered.
He shook his head.
“Someone introduced the contamination deliberately.”
Elena went pale.
“You’re saying the engine failure was sabotage?”
“I’m saying the contamination was introduced intentionally.”
“Could it have been accidental?”
Marcus pointed to the connector.
“Not like this.”
The room fell silent.
Rebecca called federal investigators.
Within an hour, the hangar was sealed.
Then Marcus got another message.
YOU SHOULD HAVE STAYED QUIET.
He stared at it.
Elena saw the message.
“They know.”
“Yes.”
“Marcus, you have to tell the authorities.”
“They already know.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“They need to know about you.”
“What do you mean?”
“Someone is threatening you.”
Marcus looked toward the hangar doors.
He thought of Ava.
For the first time, fear replaced anger.
He called his daughter’s school.
He changed her pickup arrangements.
He called a trusted neighbor.
Then he sat in his truck outside the airport.
Elena approached.
“You okay?”
Marcus nodded.
“No.”
She sat beside him.
“You’re scared.”
“Yes.”
“Because of Ava.”
“Yes.”
She reached over.
“You don’t have to do this alone.”
Marcus looked at her.
“That’s not how my life usually works.”
“Then maybe it’s time it did.”
He smiled slightly.
“You always talk like you’re writing the ending.”
“I’m a journalist.”
“Same thing.”
She laughed.
Then Marcus’s phone rang.
Federal investigator.
“We found Paul Danner.”
Marcus sat upright.
“Where?”
“Dead.”
The word hung between them.
Elena’s expression changed.
“Where?”
“At his apartment.”
Marcus closed his eyes.
The investigation had just become a murder case.
And whoever had killed Paul Danner wasn’t finished.
