Single Dad Sat Alone at the Bar—Then His Cold CEO Boss Smiled and Asked, “Will You Buy Me a Drink?”
Chapter 13
One year later, Lily started third grade.
Daniel and Victoria had become a family without realizing exactly when it happened.
There had been no dramatic announcement.
No single moment.
Just hundreds of small decisions.
Victoria learned to pack school lunches.
Daniel learned to survive investor dinners.
Lily learned that CEOs could be beaten at Monopoly.
She never let Victoria forget it.
At Hale & Mercer, Daniel became one of the most respected leaders in the company.
Not because he was Victoria’s partner.
Because he earned it.
He created employee programs for working parents.
Flexible hours.
Emergency childcare.
Paid family leave.
When an executive asked why the company was spending so much money on employees’ families, Daniel answered,
“Because people aren’t machines.”
Victoria watched from the end of the conference room.
She smiled.
She had always believed in his ability.
Now she admired him for using it.
That evening, Daniel found her alone in the office.
“You smiled.”
“I smile.”
“Not usually at work.”
She laughed.
“Come here.”
He approached.
She looked out over the city.
“Do you remember the bar?”
“Every day.”
“You thought I was crazy.”
“I still do.”
She turned.
“And yet you bought me a drink.”
“You asked.”
She smiled.
“I was testing you.”
“For what?”
“Whether you would treat me like everyone else.”
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“Whether you’d be afraid of me.”
He smiled.
“I was terrified.”
She laughed.
“Exactly.”
He took her hand.
“What would you have done if I’d refused?”
“I would have bought my own drink.”
“So this whole relationship started because you were bored at a bar.”
“Not bored.”
She squeezed his hand.
“Lonely.”
Daniel’s expression softened.
“I was lonely too.”
She leaned against him.
For a while, they stood silently.
Then Daniel pulled out a small envelope.
Victoria looked at it.
“What is that?”
“Open it.”
Inside was a plane ticket.
“Where are we going?”
“Somewhere warm.”
“Why?”
“Because you need a vacation.”
She smiled.
“What about Lily?”
“She’s coming.”
Victoria looked shocked.
“She is?”
“Of course.”
A voice came from the doorway.
“Did you say vacation?”
Lily ran inside.
Victoria laughed.
“You’ve been listening.”
Lily nodded.
“Always.”
Daniel looked at both of them.
This was his life now.
Not perfect.
But real.
Then Victoria looked at Daniel.
“One more thing.”
“What?”
“Your daughter asked me a question yesterday.”
“What?”
“She asked whether I was going to become her stepmom.”
Daniel looked at Victoria.
“What did you say?”
Victoria smiled.
“I said I hoped so.”
