Single Dad Missed His Interview to Help a Stranger—She Was the CEO Hiring Him
Chapter 6
A year after Daniel joined Whitmore Technologies, Rachel made an announcement.
The company would establish a new community program.
It would provide scholarships and job training to single parents.
Daniel was asked to lead it.
He agreed immediately.
The first event was held at a community center in Atlanta.
Dozens of parents attended.
Many were struggling.
Some had been unemployed for months.
Others were working multiple jobs.
Daniel stood at the front of the room.
“I know what it feels like to think one missed opportunity can destroy your future.”
He paused.
“I also know that sometimes your life changes because of one decision nobody else understands.”
Rachel watched from the back.
She knew exactly what he meant.
After the event, she approached him.
“You were good.”
Daniel smiled.
“Thanks.”
“You believe every word.”
“I do.”
Rachel looked at him.
“That’s why I asked you to lead it.”
Daniel looked around the room.
Parents were talking.
Children were playing.
People were exchanging resumes.
He smiled.
“This matters.”
Rachel nodded.
“It does.”
Later that evening, Daniel and Rachel walked outside.
The city lights reflected across the wet pavement.
Rachel stopped.
“Daniel.”
“Yeah?”
“I need to tell you something.”
He waited.
“When I first met you, I thought you were just a man who stopped to help.”
Daniel smiled.
“I was.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You were more than that.”
Daniel looked at her.
“You showed me something I’d forgotten.”
“What?”
“That people can still choose kindness when nobody is watching.”
Daniel was quiet.
Rachel continued.
“I don’t want you to feel like you owe me anything because I gave you another interview.”
“I don’t.”
“Good.”
She smiled.
“Because I want something completely different.”
Daniel understood.
He reached for her hand.
Rachel held it.
Neither said anything for a moment.
Then Daniel smiled.
“You’re sure?”
Rachel nodded.
“Very.”
He leaned closer.
And for the first time, the woman who had once been a stranger beside a broken-down car wasn’t his boss.
She was simply Rachel.
The woman he had stopped for.
The woman who had given him another chance.
The woman who had become part of his family.
