Years later, Daniel and Rachel stood at a Whitmore charity event.
Lily had graduated from college.
She had chosen social work.
Daniel couldn’t have been prouder.
Rachel stood beside him.
“She got that from you.”
Daniel smiled.
“Helping people?”
“Yes.”
He looked at Lily across the room.
“Maybe.”
Lily approached.
“Dad.”
“Hey.”
“I have something for you.”
She handed him a small framed photograph.
It showed Daniel beside his old truck.
Behind him was the intersection where Rachel’s car had broken down.
Underneath the photograph was a sentence:
The day you stopped, everything started.
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
“Where did you get this?”
“I took it.”
“When?”
“Last year.”
Rachel smiled.
“You never told me.”
“I wanted it to be a surprise.”
Daniel hugged her.
Then he looked at Rachel.
She was crying too.
Daniel laughed softly.
“Now we’re all crying.”
Lily smiled.
“Good.”
The three of them stood together.
Daniel thought about the man he had been before that morning.
Tired.

Trying to protect his daughter.

He had believed his life depended on getting that job.

He hadn’t known Rachel was the CEO.

Daniel always insisted on one addition.

Daniel thought for a moment.
“Sometimes.”
“And?”

Rachel smiled.

She took his hand.
“So am I.”
They watched Lily laughing with friends across the room.

And the old truck was still parked in Daniel’s garage.
He refused to sell it.
Rachel once asked why.
Daniel smiled.
“Because every time I see it, I remember.”
“Remember what?”

Rachel kissed his cheek.

Daniel nodded.
