“She’s My Wife on Paper, Nothing More” — The Crime Lord Laughed… Not Knowing She Heard Every Word
Chapter 15
Years later, Clara’s daughter asked her how she met her father.
Clara smiled.
“It wasn’t a very romantic beginning.”
“Was he handsome?”
“Unfortunately.”
The girl laughed.
“Did you love him immediately?”
“No.”
“What happened?”
Clara looked toward Lucian, who was sitting near the fireplace pretending not to listen.
“He hurt my feelings.”
Lucian raised his eyebrows.
“That is one version.”
Clara smiled.
“You told everyone I was only your wife on paper.”
Her daughter gasped.
“You did?”
Lucian sighed.
“I was trying to protect her.”
“From what?”
“People who wanted her dead.”
The girl looked confused.
Clara took her hand.
“Sometimes people hide love because they are afraid love can be used against them.”
“Did it work?”
Clara looked at Lucian.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because eventually the truth found its way through.”
Lucian stood.
He crossed the room.
Then he took Clara’s hand.
Their daughter watched them.
“So you loved each other?”
Clara smiled.
“Yes.”
Lucian corrected her.
“We still do.”
Clara leaned against him.
She remembered the woman she had been on that rainy night.
Proud.
Hurt.
Ready to leave.
She remembered the ring on the table.
The whispered words.
The humiliation.
She remembered believing that she was nothing more than a name on a document.
But the truth had been waiting behind those words.
Lucian had not laughed because Clara meant nothing.
He had laughed because the men around him believed they understood his marriage.
They didn’t.
They had seen a contract.
He had seen the woman he would eventually love more than his own life.
And Clara had once believed she was merely his wife on paper.
She was wrong.
The paper had been the beginning.
The fear had been the test.
The truth had been the choice.
And the love that survived everything became the one thing neither of them had ever planned to inherit.
A life they had chosen for themselves.
Not because their families demanded it.
Not because enemies forced it.
Not because a signature bound them.
But because, after all the secrets were gone, they looked at each other and chose to stay.
And that was the part of their story no one in that dark study had understood when Lucian laughed.
He had said she was his wife on paper.
But the truth was much simpler.
She was his wife in every way that mattered.
