“She’s My Wife on Paper, Nothing More” — The Crime Lord Laughed… Not Knowing She Heard Every Word
Chapter 13
Clara eventually became known as the woman who changed Blackwood Manor.
But she always rejected the story.
“I didn’t change him,” she would say.
“He changed himself.”
Lucian agreed.
He had spent years believing power meant making people afraid.
Clara taught him something else.
Power could mean making people feel safe.
Their shipping company prospered.
But the wealth no longer came from fear.
They built docks for local fishermen.
Provided fair wages.
Helped families rebuild after storms.
When winter came, coal was distributed to the poorest villages.
The same people who once whispered Lucian’s name in fear began speaking it with respect.
Not everyone forgave him.
Some never would.
Lucian understood.
He did not demand forgiveness.
He simply changed what he could.
Clara often reminded him:
“You cannot rewrite the past.”
“I know.”
“But you can stop repeating it.”
He would nod.
And continue.
One spring morning, Clara gave birth to their first child.
A daughter.
Lucian held the baby with trembling hands.
Elias stood nearby.
“I have seen you face armed men without blinking.”
Lucian looked at the tiny child.
“I’d rather face ten armed men.”
Clara laughed weakly.
“You’re afraid.”
“Terrified.”
“Good.”
Lucian looked at her.
“Why good?”
“Because now you understand what it means to love someone enough to be afraid of losing them.”
He kissed her hand.
“I already knew.”
