She Was Hired to Finish the Book—But the Last Chapter Was a Confession
CHAPTER 11
“You found it.”
Mara backed away.
“You killed Richard.”
Ethan didn’t deny it.
“He was going to expose me.”
“And June?”
“Alive.”
“Where?”
Ethan smiled.
“You really think I’d tell you?”
Mara raised the recorder.
“You know this exists.”
“I know.”
“You can’t stop it now.”
Ethan’s expression changed.
“Actually, I can.”
He stepped forward.
Mara’s phone rang.
Daniel.
She answered.
“Ethan is here.”
Daniel’s voice became urgent.
“Get out.”
Ethan lunged.
Mara dropped the phone and ran.
She escaped through the study window.
Ethan followed.
Outside, rain poured over the lake.
Mara ran toward the boathouse.
She heard Ethan behind her.
Then another voice.
“Stop!”
Noah.
The boy stood in the doorway.
Ethan froze.
“Noah.”
“You lied to me.”
“No.”
“You said my sister was dead.”
Ethan stared at him.
Mara realized something.
Noah knew.
He had always known more than he admitted.
“Noah,” Ethan said softly, “come here.”
The boy stepped backward.
“I know where June is.”
Ethan’s face went white.
“Where?”
Noah smiled.
“For once, Dad, I’m not telling you.”
Then sirens appeared in the distance.
Daniel had called the police.
Ethan looked at Mara.
“You think you’ve won.”
Mara shook her head.
“No.”
She held up the recorder.
“I think the truth has.”
Ethan was arrested.
But Mara wasn’t satisfied.
Because June still hadn’t been found.
