She Thought He Was a Poor Taxi Driver… He Was a Billionaire, but Why Was He Hiding His Identity?
Chapter 15
Thirty years after Rachel first stepped into Ethan’s taxi, she returned to the same airport terminal with him.
They were older now.
Gray-haired.
Slower.
But still laughing.
Rachel looked at the curb.
“This is where I met the poor taxi driver.”
Ethan smiled.
“You insulted my car.”
“It was a terrible car.”
“It was leased.”
“Still.”
They laughed.
Their grandchildren waited nearby.
One of them asked:
“Grandpa, why did Grandma think you were poor?”
Ethan looked at Rachel.
“She didn’t know who I was.”
“Who were you?”
Ethan smiled.
“Just a man driving a taxi.”
Rachel corrected him.
“A man pretending to drive a taxi.”
He laughed.
“Yes.”
The child looked confused.
“Why?”
Ethan took a moment.
“Because I wanted people to see me without seeing my money.”
“Did it work?”
“Yes.”
“Were you ever scared?”
“Yes.”
“Of what?”
“Being loved for the wrong reason.”
Rachel squeezed his hand.
“Did you find someone?”
He looked at her.
“Yes.”
She smiled.
They walked through the terminal.
Rachel stopped near the old pickup area.
“Do you remember what I asked you?”
“What?”
“Why the ride cost forty-two dollars.”
Ethan laughed.
“I remember.”
“I thought you were overcharging me.”
“I blamed traffic.”
“You lied.”
“A little.”
She smiled.
Then she looked serious.
“Would you do it again?”
“Drive a taxi?”
“Hide your identity.”
Ethan thought for a long time.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t need to hide anymore.”
She nodded.
He continued:
“I finally know the difference between privacy and fear.”
Rachel smiled.
“What’s the difference?”
“Privacy is choosing what belongs to you.”
“And fear?”
“Fear is believing people will leave if they know everything.”
She touched his face.
“I knew.”
“What?”
“Everything.”
He smiled.
“And you stayed.”
“Yes.”
Their children approached.
“Ready?”
Ethan nodded.
“Ready.”
They walked toward the exit together.
Behind them, the airport continued moving.
People arriving.
People leaving.
Strangers meeting.
Strangers separating.
Ethan thought about the woman who had once entered his taxi believing he was nobody important.
She hadn’t known his net worth.
She hadn’t known his name.
She hadn’t known his family.
She had only known the driver who returned her purse.
And that had been enough.
Because the man she eventually fell in love with wasn’t the billionaire.
He wasn’t the chairman.
He wasn’t the heir.
He was the man who listened.
The man who stayed.
The man who chose honesty after years of hiding.
And Rachel had loved that man before she ever knew about the billions.
That was the secret Ethan had been searching for all along.
He didn’t need to know whether someone loved his money.
He needed to find someone who could love him without it.
Rachel had done exactly that.
Sometimes a billionaire hides his identity because he wants to discover who people really are.
Sometimes a poor-looking taxi driver is anything but poor.
And sometimes the greatest reason to hide your fortune…
is because you are terrified that someone might love the fortune instead of you.
Ethan had spent years hiding behind an ordinary steering wheel.
But the woman in the back seat had never been impressed by the driver.
She had been impressed by the man.
And that made all the difference.
When they reached the car waiting outside, Rachel smiled.
“Where are we going?”
Ethan opened the passenger door.
“Home.”
She laughed.
“You’re still driving?”
“Sometimes.”
“Good.”
They drove away together.
No secrets.
No disguises.
No fear.
Just a man and the woman who had loved him before she ever knew he was a billionaire.
And perhaps that was the greatest fortune he had ever received.
