One morning, Ethan and Claire visited the university where Lily had graduated.
The campus was hosting a scholarship ceremony.
The scholarship was named after them.
Claire looked at the plaque.
“Do you think the younger versions of us would understand this?”
Ethan laughed.
“No.”
“Why?”
“They wouldn’t believe it.”
They walked across the campus.
A student approached.
“Mr. Cole?”
“Yes?”
“Can I ask you something?”
“Sure.”
“How did you become successful?”
Ethan thought.
“By surviving failure.”
The student nodded.
“Did someone believe in you?”
“Yes.”
He looked at Claire.
“Eventually.”
Claire smiled.
The student thanked them and left.
She turned to Ethan.
“You always make it about people.”
“It is about people.”
They sat on a bench.
Claire asked:
“Would you still marry me if you could do it all over?”
Ethan answered immediately.
“Yes.”
“Even the crazy contract?”
“Especially the crazy contract.”
She laughed.
“What if I never walked into that restaurant?”
“Then I’d have ordered dessert.”
She smiled.
“And?”
“I would’ve met you somewhere else.”
“You’re confident.”
“No.”
He took her hand.
“Just hopeful.”
They sat together.
The campus was full of young people trying to understand their futures.
Ethan recognized himself in them.
Uncertain.

Afraid.
Hopeful.
He smiled.
