Ten years later, Claire and Ethan had three children.
Their daughter Lily was nine.

The house was loud.

One evening, Lily asked:
“How did you and Dad meet?”
Claire looked at Ethan.
“Do we tell her?”
He smiled.
“Not the whole story.”
Lily frowned.
“You’re hiding something.”
Claire laughed.
“You’re too smart.”

“So Mom rejected Dad?”

“Then you married him?”

“Did you love Mom then?”
“No.”
“When did you?”
Ethan looked at Claire.
“Later.”
“Why?”

Claire smiled.
The family continued eating.

“You know what I think?”
“What?”
“Our kids are going to think we’re weird.”
“They already do.”
Claire laughed.
Then she became serious.
“Do you ever think about that first night?”
“The restaurant?”
“Yes.”
“All the time.”
“What would you do differently?”
“I’d order dessert.”
She laughed.
“That’s all?”
“Yes.”
“Not me?”
He looked at her.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because if you weren’t there…”
She smiled.
“I know.”
They sat quietly.
Then Ethan noticed something.
A black car had stopped across the street.
He watched it.
The vehicle stayed for several minutes.
Then left.
His expression changed.
Claire noticed.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
